Break of two cyclists sitting by a fountain

A fascinating world of mountains and gigantic waterfalls awaits you on this popular cycling tour through Austria. You cycle from one highlight to the next, accompanied by the fantastic mountain scenery. Winter sports enthusiasts can look forward to the ski jump in Bischofshofen, whilst history fans can plan a visit to the magnificent Hohenwerfen castle above the Salzach river. Discover the diversity of nature whilst visiting the salt mines of Hallein and the Eisriesenwelt in Werfen (where you can enter the largest ice cave in the world). Feel the power of nature at the 380m Krimml waterfall. From there you also have the opportunity to take the Postbox partway up the Großglockner mountain (3,797m), the highest mountain in Austria. Whether in the Hohe Tauern National Park or Oberpinzgau, enjoy the wonderful landscape!

From Salzburg, the cycling route follows the river Salzach via Hallein to Golling. If you like, you can take an additional tour to the Bluntau valley. The next day, cycle through Werfen and Bischofshogen to St Johann im Pongau. Then, cycle to Bruck on the Glocknerstraße, where from July you can take the Postbus up Austria’s highest mountain. For an extra adventure, you could walk around Lake Zell before reading Kaprun. After a trip with the Pinzgaubahn to Krimml, travel to Lofer and back to Salzburg.

  • Salzburg: The city of festivals and Mozart is a highlight for anyone interested in classical music and historical sights. Visit the birthplace of this world famous composer!
  • Hallein: Here, visit the salt mines that have lain silent since 1989.
  • Bischofshofen: Well known to sports fans, this place hosts the final of the Four Hills Tournament each year on the famous ski jump.
  • Krimml waterfalls: The fifth largest waterfalls in Europe are a fabulous natural spectacle. From a height of 380m, they plunge down into the depths and have a refreshing effect on those gazing on.

This cycling holiday is moderately difficult, taking you along the well-signed and well-built Tauern cycle path. It is predominantly on quiet paths and country roads. Only a few stretches are busy. Since there are occasionally slight inclines, a good basic level of fitness is recommended.
