The Austrian romance tour.
The classic route along the river Danube from Passau to Vienna is one
of the most beautiful cycle tours of Europe. Nobody will forget the
unique natural beauties of Schlogener Schlinge, the legendary
Nibelungen country or famous Wachau with vineyards and apricot
orchards.
History left visible traces along the tour, ruins and fortresses,
former settlements of Danube skippers or traces of the Roman
civilization. You will notice the changes of local colour from Bavaria
through Upper Austria and Lower Austria to Vienna. Homemade
specialities vary from rustic to sophisticated and beverage preferences
change from beer to cider and wine. Do not miss the opportunity of
getting the taste of Austria. This route is ideally suited for a cycle
holiday with the whole family.

Tour course
Day 1: Individual arrival at Passau/Schaerding
Enjoy the flair of the three-river-city Passau or baroque city Schaerding.
Day 2: Passau – Schloegen/St. Agatha/Wesenufer approx. 40-60 km
Stroll through the city, visit the dome and listen to a concert on the world’s biggest church organ (except on Sundays and holidays). Cycle along the river Danube via Obernzell to Engelhartszell (Austria’s sole Trappist monastery). Through natural reserve Donauleiten on the north bank to Schlogener Schlinge. Here granite stone was too hard an obstacle for the river to pass through and the water had to make a 180° bend.
Day 3: Schloegen/St. Agatha/Wesenufer – Linz approx. 55 km
You cycle through the fascinating double bend between Schloegen and Aschach. Many ruins of old fortresses keep watch. Cultural highlight of today is the monastery Wilhering. In the evening enjoy a stroll through historic old town of Linz, capital of Upper Austria. We suggest taking a ride
on canary-yellow Linz City Express to get a real good view of the cultural capital 2009.
Day 4: Linz – Perg/Grein/surroundings approx. 50 km
Today you might consider a detour to St. Florian (baroque style Augustine monastery) and into the oldest city of Austria – Enns. See the main-square with the symbol of Enns – 60 m high city tower from the 16th century proudly rising in the centre. Equally situated on the main-square is museum Lauriacum showcasing a remarkable archaeological collection. You cycle on the river past Mauthausen, Au on Danube to Perg and Mitterkirchen and Grein/Bad Kreuzen. In the afternoon you reach lovely baroque style city with Danube Skipper Museum and the oldest theatre of Austria, still in action.
Day 5: Perg/Grein/surroundings – Marbach/Maria Taferl/Persenbeug approx. 50 km
Once a crucial and much dreaded part by Danube skippers, it is harmless to cycle – Strudengau. Maria Taferl is a popular and beautifully located pilgrim’s church, attracting thousands of pilgrims every year.
Day 6: Marbach/Maria Taferl/Persenbeug – Krems approx. 65 km
One of the highlights of Danube cycle trail is famous Wachau. You cycle to Melk with imposing Benedictine monastery. Melk also is the gateway to Wachau. Through vineyards and orchards you cycle past wine-growing towns as Spitz, Weißenkirchen and Durnstein to Krems, the 1.000 year old town! To get an idea of the culinary temptations, a wine-tasting will be arranged for you.
Day 7: Krems – Vienna approx. 80 km
Past monastery Goettweig you cycle via Traismauer to flower-city Tulln. Tipp: visit the Egon-Schiele-Museum. The heights of Vienna Forest close in on the river. If you are not in a hurry to leave, book some extra days to enjoy Vienna and the surroundings. Visit Klosterneuburg with the art-treasures and a private art-museum, walk in Empress Elisabeth’s footsteps in castle Schoenbrunn, visit castle Belvedere and enjoy a horse-carriage tour of the centre. The last 25 km from Tulln to Vienna can be covered by train (individual organisation).
Day 8: Individual departure or extra days
Route features
Along the river Danube flat or slightly descending, almost 100% on dedicated cycle path without any motor traffic. There are only very short parts on quiet minor roads. Simply a masterpiece of a bicycle tour as it should be.
