Province Northern Holland
Surrounded by water – the Dutch province northern Holland is located on an island in-between the North Sea, the Wadden Sea and IJsselmeer. The rich history of northern Holland can be seen until today in many places. Picturesque cities are telling stories from a time where IJsselmeer was named Zuiderzee and had an open access to the North Sea. A visit of the Zuiderzee museum in Enkhuizen revives these times again. Northern Holland also has a unique flora and fauna. You cycle through former lakes and marsh which was dried up in the 17th century with wind mills. A diversified, typical Dutch landscape is awaiting you, dunes and North Sea beaches, die North Sea island Texel and many picturesque harbour cities at Ijsselmeer.

Tour course
Day 1: Arrival to Amsterdam, journey by boat Amsterdam – Hoorn
Individual arrival to Amsterdam. Embarkation in the afternoon from 3 p.m. until 4.30 p.m. Maybe there is some time left to experience the old city and to go shopping. Around 5 p.m. cruise to Hoorn with its historic old city.
Day 2: Hoorn – Enkhuizen approx. 30 km
Bike tour from Hoorn where a lot of buildings from the 17th century still are in good condition (as for example the Regentur of western Friesland – today a museum – the city weighing machine at Rodesteen, the harbour tower as well as the ware houses at the old wharf) to Enkhuizen. Tipp: the beautiful harbour and the Zuiderzee museum.
Day 3: Journey by boat Enkhuizen – Lemmer, Lemmer loop tour approx. 45 km
By boat via Ijsselmeer to Lemmer (not at bad weather). Start of your bike loop tour: via Oosterzee Buren to Tjeukemeer, on to Delfstrahuizen to Munnekeburen, around Rottige Meente and via Scherpenzeel and Schoterzijl back to Lemmer with historic old city and picturesque houses.
Day 4: Lemmer – Stavoren approx. 30 km, journey by boat Stavoren – Oudeschild (island Texel)
By bike to Sandeler Leijen lake, from there through the forest of Rijsterbos and along Mokkebank (bird sanctuary) to Roode Klif in Stavoren. By boat from Oudeschild to island Texel.
Day 5: Loop tour island Texel, approx 65 km, journey by boat Oudeschild – Den Helder
Bike loop tour on the biggest Dutch North Sea island Texel. Tip: The well signposted Thijsse route (about 40 km) and visit of the seal breeding station EcoMare. At 6 p.m. 2-hours journey by boat back to Den Helder.
Day 6: Den Helder – Alkmaar approx. 25 – 55 km
In the morning you cycle through the dunes to Alkmaar. There is the possibility to go on board in St. Maartensvlotbrug and to go by boat to Alkmaar or to start the bike tour not until St. Maartensvlotbrug.
Day 7: Journey by boat Alkmaar – Wormerveer, Wormerveer – Amsterdam approx. 30 km
Possibility to visit the cheese market. At midday journey by boat from Alkmaar to Wormerveer. By bike to the open air museum Zaanse Schans (wind mills, dutch village, cheese dairy and others). Through the local recreation area “Twiske” back to Amsterdam. In the evening possibility of a boat tour along the canals in Amsterdam (bookable on board).
Day 8: Departure from Amsterdam
After breakfast disembarkation and individual trip home.
Route features
You cycle daily about 30 to 60 km. Nearly all routes are easy to cycle. You cycle on asphalted and signposted bike paths.
