No country of Europe offers so many different combinations of travelling by boat and bicycle as the Netherlands. So the obvious choice is to take advantage of this convenient and interesting approach. You will discover the most bicycle-friendly country of Europe on various routes. You live on typical Netherlands riverboats, originally used for inland traffic and adapted for our way of travelling. Your boat accompanies the daily tour so that you even can decide to stay onboard and to enjoy a picturesque river cruise. No looking for hotels, no packing and unpacking of suitcases and during the day free cycling along without luggage.

Tour course

Day 1: Individual arrival in Amsterdam
Take your time to see the capital of The Netherlands, do some shopping or join the Grachten tour, visit one of the many interesting museums or just stroll around the old town.

Day 2: Amsterdam – Aalsmeer by ship
Aalsmeer – Leiden approx. 35 km

You start with a journey by ship from Amsterdam to Aalsmeer. You will pass 14 bridges; most of them have to be opened for the MS Sir Winston. Your first bike tour starts in Aalsmeer. You cycle to the Westernsteiner Plassen Brassemeer and to Leiden (the landing stage is approx. 3 km away from the city centre). During the tulip bloom you can cycle also on an alternative route through the fields.    

Day 3: Leiden – Alpheen aan den Rijn approx. 40 km
Journey by ship to Gouda

In the morning you cycle into the centre of Leiden. Afterwards you reach the sea side Katwijk (North Sea) where you cycle through the dunes to Alpheen aan den Rijn. Relax on your journey by ship to Gouda (cheese).

Day 4: Gouda – Rotterdam by ship
Rotterdam–Delft–Den Haag–Scheveningen approx. 60 km

Before breakfast you go by ship to Rotterdam. Your bike tour leads you via Delft (porcelain factory), Den Haag (seat of the government) and Scheveningen. You can cycle back or take the train (rail & bike, not included) to Rotterdam.

Day 5: Rotterdam – Schoonhoven approx. 38 km
Today you cycle to Kinderdijk (UNESCO world cultural heritage with 19 wind mills) and to Schoonhoven. You can also start or end your tour in Kinderdijk.

Day 6: Schoonhoven – Utrecht approx. 50 km
Utrecht – Zaandam by ship

Today you can look forward to cycling through picturesque polder country to Oudewater. In Oudewater a visit of old “Witch Scales” might be interesting. Afterwards you go by ship from Amsterdam to Zaandam.

Day 7: Zaandam – Amsterdam approx. 30 km
From Zaandam you cycle to museum village „Zaanse Schans“, where you can see an old village, windmills and a carver’s workshop of wooden shoes. Return to Amsterdam through “Twiske”, holiday area of the locals.

Day 8: After breakfast disembarkation

Route features

To travel the Netherlands by bicycle and boat maybe is the most natural way to discover this country. They are an El Dorado for cyclists. Some thousand kilometres of very well maintained bicycle paths enable interesting and relaxing tours and a personal approach of discovering the most attractive parts of the flat country. Additionally the Netherlands are a country of water: almost every significant city and many points of interest are accessible by water. Our comfortable boats chug along beautiful small canals and rivers.

Extras

Parking/arrival and departure
Amsterdam Central station: the landing stage is located in the near of the Central station.
Guarded car park in Amsterdam for about € 70, a reservation is not possible.

Notes
  • The program and all details are subject to changes due to nautical and meteorological reasons.
  • Individual arrival and departure, embarkation in Amsterdam from 03.00 p.m. until 06.00 p.m., disembarkation after breakfast until 10.00 a.m.
  • The bike tours are self-guided; daily stages from 30 km to 60 km. The routes are similar to cycle.
  • You can bring your own bike without surcharge (disclaimer for possible disadvantage, damage or burglary)
  • The program and all details are subject to changes due to nautical and meteorological reasons.
  • Special wishes concerning meal (like diet or vegetarian food) will be considered. Please consult your wishes with the guide. Surcharge is € 2 per person and day, payable on spot. Please mention this already with the booking.
