Danube Delta, Hotel boat
Europe's last nature paradise.
Arrival in Bucharest
Individual arrival to Bucharest or Bucharest airport if you are flying. At 2pm there is a bus transfer (approx. 4 h) to the starting point of the tour - Tulcea in the Danube Delta. You can then embark your comfortable floating hotel. Dinner and overnight stay will be on the hotel boat.
You will travel along the most southern Danube arm through the Bestepe Hills nature reserve . You get a wonderful view deep down into the Delta and it will make you forget about some of the ascents. When you get to the small fishing village Murighiol, we enter into a maze of channels, floating islands, dense forests and a pure wilderness experience by boat. Overnight on hotel boat.
You cycle along a bumpy gravel path – on the right is the open range of the Black Sea and on the left there are lush green reeds and marsh land. In the loneliness of the Danube Delta Cormorants and Great White Egrets are our permanent companions. Kilometer “0” at Sulina: the Danube has reached its 'final destination' at the lighthouse and starts to merge with the salt of the sea. Overnight stay on hotel boat.
The path leads you to Letea, a picturesque village. To get there you go past Musur bay, which is a bird paradise. It seems as if time stands still here. The houses are made of reed and loam and are painted in a lovely blue colour. They are surrounded by contemplative silence. Close to the village, located on a sandbank, a special wonder of nature can be observed – a tropical forest with climbing plants and lianes. We will reach the fishing village Crisan by boat. Overnight stay on hotel boat.
During the cruise through a labyrinth of narrow waterways, we pass by small fishing villages and experience the incredible diversity of the fauna and flora of the UNESCO World Heritage Danube Delta again. In the afternoon we return from a surreal dream world to the vibrant city life of Tulcea. Overnight stay on hotel boat.
Round trip through a gently undulating landscape to the orthodox monastery Celic Dere, the biggest convent of the Dobrogea territory. The beautiful monastery of Saon with its distinctive windmill is located amidst vineyards right on the bank of the Danube. From a ridge, you have a fantastic view over the extensive and green floodplain Ukraine's border. Transfer back to Tulcea. Overnight stay at Tulcea guesthouse 4*.
We travel to the old town Ceamurlia de Jos by bus. The nature reserve of Cape Dolosman with the Greek-Roman excavations of Argamum seperates the Delta lakes Golovita and Razim. By bike you reach the medieval fortress of Enisala, which is located high above the Danube. Let us enjoy a breathtaking view over the Lagoon Razim! Overnight stay at Tulcea guesthouse 4*.
After breakfast there is a bus transfer back to the Romania's capital, Bucharest. You will arrive at the airport at approx. 2pm. Please do not book any flights before 4 pm. You can book additional nights in Tulcea or Bucharest if you would like.
Tour character
Amid the Danube delta, you cycle mainly on sandy paths, gravel roads or tarmac country roads. The route is hilly and in parts you will be cycling on roads with traffic.
With the local bike tour guide, you can learn how to recognise birds by their flight or sound. You discover rare flora and fauna, life of the Delta residents and the incredible and eventful past of this region, which even fascinated the Romans and Greeks.
Food on the trip is traditional with a lot of fish, meat and vegetables. At lunch, you will have picnics or a packed lunch.
You cycle in a group of about 12-20 people and some cycling experience is required for this tour. Sand and gravel roads mean that you need a bit of fitness.
