Useful information about your cycle holiday in Tyrol

The climate in Tyrol

Tyrol is known far and wide for its snowy and cold winters. Well, we are lucky as our cycle tours only run from spring to autumn. And the weatherman says there should be some better weather. In Tyrol the inner alpine mountain climate prevails. This means warm but occasionally humid summer months (due to heat storms) and a beautiful golden autumn with warm temperatures and little rainfall. Nevertheless, good clothes are recommended, as with any cycle tour!

The Tyrolean cuisine

The Tyrolean cuisine is characterised by hearty food. A steaming soup with spicy ‘Kaspressknödeln’ (cheese dumplings), ‘Kasspatzn’ (cheesey dish) with a fresh green salad, a crispy grilled ‘Tyrolean Gröstl’ (pan of potatoes, meat and topped with egg) or delicious stuffed bacon dumplings are the figureheads of famous Tyrolean cuisine. But sweet delicacies, such as the famous ‘Kaiserschmarrn’ (chopped pancakes), ‘Moosbeernocken’ or ‘Apfelradeln’ (cake with apples) can’t be forgotten in Tyrolean cuisine! Are you worried about your waistline? Well, luckily you can burn up the calories afterwards.

Yodelling – the Tyrolean answer to the phone

Yodelling is an artful way of singing, but with our lyrics. The syllables that are yodelled have no meaning. Not many people are really good at yodelling, because you have to be able to jump octaves and have a large range. Yodelling is very widespread in the German and French speaking regions of the Alps and originated in the gray eras for the purpose of communicating over great distances. Over time, the yodelling became a vocal form that is firmly interwoven into Tyrolean culture.

Did you know…?

  • …that the highest mountain in Austria – the Großglockner – is in Tyrol?
  • …that the traditional Schuhplattler (folk dance) is modelled on the courtship behaviour of the capercaillie? Schuhplattler is danced purely by men to court a woman. They beat their hands on their thighs and shoes.

  • …that the Olympic Winter Games were held in Innsbruck twice? Once in 1964 and the second time in 1976.
  • …that the eponymous bridge over the Inn in the Tyrolean capital – the Innbrücke – still appears in the city seal and coat of arms?
