Two cyclists in the centre of Verona, with the Arena and typical Italian houses in the background

A cycle tour for leisure cyclists that could hardly be more multifaceted! From mountainous Tyrol to the Adriatic, where the sea breeze blows around your nose. In addition to cultural highlights, culinary delights await, starting in Tyrol with hearty dishes and culminating in the lagoon city with pasta and wine. In addition, you can take in the cities of the tour: Innsbruck, Bolzano, Trento, Verona, Venice - cyclists' hearts, what more could you desire?

Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol, serves as the starting point of the tour, which is already high on the 1st stage. By train or minibus, the journey takes you to the Brenner Pass and from there over 1,300 metres of altitude downhill to the lagoon city. The first destination, however, is the bishop's town of Brixen with its beautiful cathedral.

Along the Eisack river we travel to Bolzano, where a visit to "Ötzi" in the archaeological museum is included. Via Trento, the journey leads along the Adige river to Rivalta and Verona, where not only romantics should pay a visit to the balcony of the "Casa di Giulietta". Before the lagoon city beckons, a true insider tip awaits: Vicenza scores with numerous impressive villas and palaces by the Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio (a UNESCO World Heritage Site).

  • The Golden Roof in Innsbruck: Innsbruck's old town is a great place to stroll, shop and enjoy yourself. Between Annasäule, Ottoburg and the city's most famous landmark, the "Goldenes Dachl", there are many sights to explore.
  • South Tyrolean wine and fruit: Apple-growing areas whose beguiling scent makes the blossom in spring even more special and the harvest in autumn a true experience. After a cycle along the countless vines, perhaps you would like a tasting?
  • Piazza del Duomo in Trento: After the stages, how about a spritzer and a plate of antipasti? The perfect location for this is the delightful Piazza del Duomo in Trento, where culture and architecture create a beautiful scene.
  • Cycle around the Arena di Verona: The third largest preserved amphitheatre in the world offers cultural delights. Where gladiators once fought, nowadays concerts and operas take place.

Along the Adige and Eisack rivers towards the Adriatic coast, the cycle paths are excellent. Whether along railway lines, embankments or trade routes - variety is guaranteed. The stages with a maximum length of 70 km are easily manageable for every cyclist, only a few (and mostly short) ascents have to be overcome.

Itinerary at a glance

This journey ranges from alpine to Mediterranean - from the old town in Innsbruck with the Golden Roof to the lagoon city of Venice. In between are Bolzano and Bressanone, the South Tyrolean apple-growing regions and the famous Arena di Verona.

Welcome briefing and bike fitting. For the rest of the day, we recommend that you visit Innsbruck’s famous old town with its city tower and its “Golden Roof”.

After breakfast, we will take you up to the Brenner Pass (by train or minibus). From the small border town Brenner, you will cycle on a newly extended bike path, mostly along the river Eisack. It takes you to the little village Gossensass at first and immediately afterwards to Sterzing, the once mighty city of the Fugger. You will continue your tour to Thumberg, to the beautiful Reifenstein Castle, and via Stilfes and Mittenwald to Franzensfeste where there is a famous fortress. The bike path continues to the beautiful and quiet Lake Varna, to Varna itself and finally to Brixen, today's destination.

You will ride your bike through the Dürer town Klausen along the river Eisack to Waidbruck (view of Castle Trostburg). Here, the valley gets narrower and leads into the Bolzano basin. The city where two cultures meet is awaiting its visitors with many attractions (Archaeological Museum with Ötzi, the Iceman – free admission with BrixenCard on day of arrival).

You will cycle mostly along the river Adige and partly through orchards to Salorno, where the German speaking South Tyrol ends. From here, you will continue to Trento with its interesting old town.

On this stage the Adige valley just keeps on getting narrower and narrower. The mountain ranges on which for many centuries impressive castles guarded over one of the most important trade routes are coming closer and closer too. We recommend a visit to Rovereto and the city of Mozart, Ala. Then you will continue your tour on the bike path to Rivalta.

Sample hotel: Albergo Olivo

On the sixth day, you will cycle on the well-developed bike trail along the river Adige to Verona, with only a few stops.

Today’s route is initially flat and then you will cycle through the Monti Berici hills to the excursion area of Vicenza, with a beautiful view over the city. To make this longer stage a bit shorter, you can also travel the first part by train to San BonifacioIn the old town of Vicenza you can feel the spirit of Palladio, the famous architect from the Renaissance.

As you leave Vicenza you will see numerous Venetian villas such as the Villa Rotonda. The route along the river Bacchiglione leads to Abano Terme, one of the most famous Italian spa towns. From Abano Terme, you can easily travel by bus to Padua, the city of St Anthony and the scholars. There you will have enough time to enjoy the thermal baths. If you are culturally-minded, you can enjoy Padua overnight for an additional charge.

Sample hotel: Aqua

With a light wind behind you most of the time, it’s an easy ride towards the sea.  The landscape is full of meadows and fields. This stage will take you to the mainland before Venice with its excellent bus service into the city of lagoons.
