Cycling group on cycle paths along the reed banks of Lake Neusiedl

Eastern AustriaHungary and Slovakia are waiting to be discovered on this tour. Eurobike has dedicated eight days to this region, which is still considered to be an insider tip. Expect unique landscapes, cultural highlights, great cities as well as picturesque villages and a varied cuisine accompanied by excellent wines. Are you in?

Upon arrival, you should exploreVienna before the first stage of the tour leads to Baden. Between the Vienna Forest and vineyards, the spa town attracts visitors with its casino, thermal baths and a charming Biedermeier-style town centre. The tour continues towards Lake Neusiedl, a steppe lake that is truly unique in Austria. You may spot some of the famous storks with which the inhabitants share their pretty home.

After a detour to Hungary, you will enter the "Neusiedler See - Seewinkel" National Park, which is 300 km2 in size and is known for its exceptional flora and fauna. It is of great importance as a resting place for bird migration, where thousands of birds stop. The 6th day of the tour serves as a rest day, where you can enjoy the lake to the fullest. The last stage leads into Slovakia to Bratislava. On the way you pass the birthplace of Joseph and Michael Haydn. In Carnuntum you will follow in the footsteps of the Romans, where today you can visit a reconstructed Roman town quarter.

  • Vienna's magnificent Ringstrasse: this is certainly and by far where most of the city's sights are to be found - whether the State Opera House, City Hall or Parliament. Did you know? The Ringstrasse is divided into nine sections.
  • The gentle vineyards of Lake Neusiedl are not only an eye-catcher in the unique landscape, but also the home of world-famous wines. Be sure to stop at one of the ‘Buschenschenken’ and taste not only the fine wines, but also the special cuisine, which features Hungarian influences.
  • The cycle tour to Hungary to the former Ödenburg offers two highlights. In Sopron, a walk through the great old town, including the Fire Tower, Trinity Column and Ursuline Church, is worthwhile. But the outward and return journeys are not to be neglected either, as travel fantasies come true along Lake Neusiedl!
  • Lively Bratislava is very underrated among Europe's capitals. Stroll through the lively old town and stop by the UFO. What is that? I guess you'll have to find out for yourself...

The route is almost entirely flat, with the exception of a few vineyards. One or two stages can be shortened by taking the train. A special feature awaits on the last day - from Bratislava back to Vienna by hydrofoil.

Itinerary at a glance

After the numerous sights of Vienna's Ringstrasse (Ring Street), varied nature awaits you at Lake Neusiedl. Taste fine wines and get to know Hungarian cuisine, for example during a visit to the old town of Sopron.

Tour information and bike fitting. The imperial city can be explored by bike very well. The famous Ringstraße with its splendid buildings such as the State Opera, Parliament, Burgtheater, City Hall and not to forget the Hofburg Palace are considered the most magnificent examples. But also Kärntnerstraße and St. Stephens cathedral and the quiet corners and alleyways of Old Vienna are worth seeing.

The bike tour will begin close to the Danube Island and takes you on bike paths to Schönbrunn. After a sightseeing tour (not included in the tour price) you will first cycle slightly uphill and then on a winding bike path down to the city of Baden. The old spa town in the Vienna Woods can tell a long story. It is certainly no coincidence that here Beethoven completed his "Ninth" with the Ode to Joy. The famous Casino of Baden, the beautiful Roman spa and the thermal spa in the Art Deco style from 1926 with which the Viennese nobility once brought the Adriatic beach to Baden, are worth seeing.

Or: Board the local train (Badner Bahn not included) at Josefsplatz, which has been taking its passengers directly in an on hour from Vienna's Opera to the Casion Baden since the days of Emperor Franz Joseph. Purchase tickets yourself at the train station. Your bikes will be transported to Baden.

You will leave Baden on beautiful bike paths. Just a little while later you will find yourself in a completely new landscape. The atmosphere at Europe's westernmost steppe lake almost feels a little strange, since here, at the foothills of the Leithagebirge mountains, the Hungarian puszta starts. You can visit Eisenstadt (Esterhazy Castle) and St. Margaret (Roman stone quarry) or other sightseeing destinations (not included in the tour price). The Burgenland wines are world famous. While driving through the hilly vineyards, you can enjoy a magnificent view over the lake. Rust and Mörbisch are probably the most charming wine towns in Burgenland.

By bike you cycle from Garmisch-Partenkirchen via Klais to the beautiful Barmsee. Afterwards you have the option of cycling directly to your overnight accommodation or taking a detour via Mittenwald and Scharnitz to the source of the Isar. A total of 300 metres in altitude are covered to Scharnitz, from there slightly uphill through wild and romantic gorges and lush alpine meadows to the source of the Isar. Back through the sunny high-altitude valley with marvellous panoramic views onto the Karwendel and the Wetterstein mountain ranges via Mittenwald to Wallgau – a village where Bavarian traditions are still alive today.

In the morning you will take a ferry to Illmitz. Today, it’s all about the national park “Neusiedlersee-Seewinkel”. The patios of birdwatchers are the only elevations you will find. Moreover, it should be noted that here, as well as on the slopes of the west side, between Podersdorf, Illmitz and Apetlon in the flat plains of the vineyards, excellent quality wines are produced. Some Trockenbeerenauslese wines of this area enjoy an excellent reputation. You will also come across some smaller or larger salt lakes (called Lacken) which are about 50 cm deep. This attraction of Seewinkel helped the region to its unique flora and fauna - and of course the “Lacken” bike trail to its name. The bike path will take you past wetlands, pastures and vineyards.

A day to relax and recover: numerous leisure activities provide a lot of variety. The lake is a true paradise for sailors, surfers, and swimmers. Cyclists may want to ride their bikes around the lake on the pretty Kirschblütenweg cycle path.

Now that you are relaxed and refreshed, the route will lead you via Rohrau (birthplace of Joseph and Michael Haydn) into the "Roman Carnuntum", where once upon a time the amber and the limes roads crossed (Haidentor - a huge triumphal monument). At the Open Air Museum Petronell, you can visit a faithfully reconstructed Roman urban quarter (not included in the tour price). The border town of Hainburg is located directly on the Danube, just a few kilometers from your final destination Bratislava. We recommend an evening stroll through the beautiful old town.
