Tauern cycle path for families

From Krimml to Salzburg

7 Days / 6 Nights
Medium
Small white chapel and old farm on the roadside, with mountains and forest in the background

The Salzach and the Saalach run their course through the flat valley between the impressive Hohen Tauern mountains and the district of Salzburg. The river is a great place for families to cycle and it is also very diverse. You can visit the Krimmler waterfalls (the highest in Europe) and can go along the Salzach and Saalach past lush green meadows and snow covered mountains until you reach Salzburg, the festival city. The pleasant stages are ideal for families, who would like to go on a cycling holiday for the first time but also offer more experienced cyclists time to explore other things in addition to doing the cycling tour. It is good to have excess time though because in almost every place you go past there is a natural lake, a pool or a free time park to play and splash around in. A bit of time should also be used to explore the nature along the way on route or to go to the ‘Hohe Tauern’ national park centre. Stop off along the way at some of the excellent guest houses and enjoy the Austrian food like ‘Pinzgauer Kasnocken’, ‘Kaspressknödel’ and ‘Salzburger Nockerl’. Whether it be the food, the culture or the nature: you are bound to be charmed by this cycle tour along the Tauern cycle path!

From Oberpinzgau we continue towards Mittelpinzgau. The region here knows how to impress with its particularly lush flora and fauna. Authentic cuisine and unadulterated customs make this region particularly lovable. Once in Kaprun, a visit to the high mountain reservoirs is a special experience.

Take the opportunity for a refreshing dip in Lake Zell. You will soon arrive in Saalfelden having cycled via the castle village of Maishofen and Maria Alm with its well-known pilgrimage church. The summer toboggan run is great fun for kids and adults.

The cycle path along the Saalach river leads you to the impressive Seisenbergklamm gorge and the Lamprechtshöhle (Europe’s deepest cave). The well-known chocolate manufacturer “Berger” is located in Lofer. Re-energised, you cycle a little further to the tranquil village of Unken.
