Arrival in Krimml
This tour's starting point is located at the foot of Europe’s biggest waterfalls. A blustering amount of water thunders and plunges down 400 metres. Marvel at this nature spectacle from a well-designed high altitude path. Your rental bikes (if booked) are ready and waiting for you at your hotel.
Today’s tour takes you through the Hohe Tauern national park and the Oberpinzgau region. Snow-cappped summits with a height of 3000 metres are your constant companion. At the same time lush green meadows and pretty little villages alternate and form an amazing backdrop. In Kaprun you have the opportunity to visit the reservoirs and artificial lakes high up in the mountains.
Stop off at lake Zell for an invigorating swim, the very energetic cyclists have the option of an additional cycle tour around the lake if they wish. After that you cycle via Maria Alm where there is a famous pilgrimage church. You quickly reach Saalfelden with its many restaurants that invite you for a well-earned lunch break. More highlights along the way to Lofer are the Seisenberg ravine and the Lamprechtshöhe near Weißbach.
Today you cycle through the placid Saalach valley. Bad Reichenhall is a true little gem that oozes Bavarian flair and that is tucked away in the 'German Corner’. From here you are very close to Salzburg, Mozart's city. Salzburg has plenty of culture on offer and it attracts visitors from both near and afar. Please leave plenty of time to amble through the old part of town and to visit Mozart’s birth place.
To start with you cycle along the river Salzach. After that you ride along the abandoned train track of the Ischler-Bahn all the way to Eugendorf. Via lush meadows the cycle path takes you to Thalgau and to the foot of the 'Drachenwand’ (dragon’s wall), which is a breathtaking rockface stretching all the way across to lake Mondsee. The lakeside cycle path takes you to the same-named town.
Cycle along the south banks of lake Attersee and then onwards into the romantic Weißenbach valley. This will lead you over to the Traun valley and into the venerable imperial town of Bad Ischl. You cycle along the Ischler Ache and it is a comfortable and fairly short ride to lake Wolfgangsee. You will go past St. Wolfgang (Weißes Rössl, parish church and the cog railway up to the Schafberg mountain), Strobl, Abersee (Zinkenbach ravine) and St. Gilgen, the Mozart village on lake Wolfgangsee on your way.
You take the cycle path to St. Gilgen ('Mozart village’). You can then go for a short walk through the Tiefbrunnau area, past lake Hintersee and through the Strub ravine into Wiestal valley (artificial lake). Through the Glasenbach ravine into the Salzach valley. Shortly before arriving in Salzburg we recommend that you visit Hellbrunn Palace (park, zoo, trick fountains and water garden). Your day 7-finish is the festival and Mozart City Salzburg with its countless tourist attractions (castle fortress, old town).
The Tauern Cycle Path is well-signposted throughout, but from Salzburg you follow the local cycle paths. You cycle on quiet, asphalted or gravel cycle paths or rural roads, only occasionally is there more traffic where it is unfortunately unavoidable. There are only very few ascents to tackle.
