Cycle break with a view of Burghausen

Tauern Cycle path with charm

From Krimml to Passau via Salzburg

8 Days / 7 Nights
Medium
Cycle break with a view of Burghausen

Embark on a cycling journey from the High Tauern to the Inn, commencing in Salzburg, traversing Upper Austria, and extending into Bavaria. Throughout this cycling holiday, you'll encounter formidable mountain landscapes, the charming Inn Valley, and culminate at the confluence of three rivers in Passau. At the meeting point of the Inn, Ilz, and Danube, the architecture exudes a distinctly Mediterranean ambiance. On the gastronomic front, savor hearty delights such as Salzburger Nockerl, an Innviertler Knödelteller, or Bavarian roast pork. Immerse yourself in the splendor of nature, explore picturesque cities, and relish a sporty respite from the routines of daily life!

Begin your journey in the High Tauern from the town of Krimml, reaching Zell am See as your initial destination. Even in the summer months, the lake's shores offer views of snow-capped mountain peaks, with plenty of water sports activities awaiting your participation. On your way to Lofer, iconic sights like the pointed church steeple in Maria Alm or the enchanting Seisenberg Gorge present themselves as popular photo opportunities. Salzburg adds to the dilemma – should you prioritize a visit to the fortress or explore the charming Getreidegasse first?

As you follow the course of the Inn, the terrain gradually levels out, taking you past the picturesque Burghausen, the baroque Obernberg, and the splendid Stift Reichersberg. Make sure not to overlook Schärding before gently pedaling towards the enchanting three rivers city. Here, a fusion of student ambiance, Bavarian culture, and Venetian charm awaits – a delightful conclusion to a rewarding vacation.

  • The Krimml Falls: Don't leave the starting point of this journey without visiting the famous waterfalls. After all, with a total drop of 380 meters over three stages, they are the largest in Europe. Besides, they are believed to promote health, as the water particles in the air are said to have positive effects on respiratory health. Interestingly, the waterfalls in the Hohe Tauern National Park area have been designated as particularly worthy of protection since 1984.
  • Picturesque Burghausen: The castle in Burghausen, Bavaria, stretches for over a kilometer—few worldwide can match its size, and in Central Europe, it stands as the largest castle complex.
  • The baroque town of Schärding: As you plan the final kilometers of your cycling vacation, consider making a stop in the delightful town of Schärding. The Silberzeile with its many colorful townhouses is a true feast for the eyes, while indulging in one of the numerous restaurants on the town square is a treat for the palate. Explore interesting aspects of the formative craftsmanship at the Granite Museum and visit the love-stricken Frenchman in the castle park.

The route, divided into six daily stages, features a descent of approximately 750 meters. With some stamina, you'll easily manage the distance, and the few inclines, as a reward for your efforts, reveal splendid panoramas.

You can find many tips on our information page about the Tauern Cycle Path. Upon reaching Passau, by the way, you can seamlessly transition to the popular Danube Cycle Path.

Itinerary at a glance

Along the Tauern Cycle Path, idyllic nature meets charming towns - and you will stay in excellent hotels along the way. Stroll through the Getreidegasse in Salzburg (the old town’s bustling heart) and visit Reichersberg Abbey before reaching Passau.

Take a walk today to see Europe’s highest waterfalls

Today’s stage takes you through the Hohe Tauern National Park and the Upper Pinzgau region. Stunning views of snow-covered, three-thousand-metre peaks will accompany you the whole way. Your immediate surroundings will alternate between lush green meadows and cute little villages, which offer you a fairytale backdrop. Take a stroll in Zell am See along the edge of the lake and enjoy the special flair found in this mountain town.

Take the opportunity for a refreshing dip in Lake Zell. You will soon arrive in Saalfelden having cycled via the castle village of Maishofen and Maria Alm with its well-known pilgrimage church. Maria Alm is a great place to take a lunch break. Other highlights along the way to Lofer include the Seisenberg gorge and Lamprechtshöhle (Europe’s deepest cave) near Weißbach.

On today’s bike ride, you will be cycling through the tranquil Saalach valley. Bad Reichenhall tucked away in a little corner of Germany is bound to enchant you. Just a little bit further left to go before you will arrive in Salzburg, the city of Mozart. The vast amount of culture there will enthral you for sure. Make sure to leave enough time for a wander around the historic city and to visit Mozart’s birthplace.

In Oberndorf you can visit the „Silent Night Chapel". Obendorf’s extensive alluvial forests will then lead you to Tittmoning. From there you follow the “Naturerlebnisweg Unterer Inn“ (Lower Inn nature discovery trail) to Burghausen. A magnificent old town and the largest castle complex in Central Europe are the two most noteworthy features in this town.

You will leisurely cycle along the Inn cycle path to the gothic town of Braunau. Along the way, you will see many bird colonies nesting close to the river banks. You continuously follow the German-Austrian border until you get to Obernberg where you will be staying tonight. Check out its well-known marketplace and its baroque architecture. Bad Füssing, a Bavarian spa town, is just a stone’s throw away from here.

You continue along the Inn river, which the famous Reichersberg abbey lies next to. In Schärding make sure to take a break at its baroque market square before reaching Passau, today’s destination. In Passau a three rivers cruise would most certainly be a fitting end to your cycle tour.
