Ten Lakes & Sound of Music

Enjoy the shining world of lakes in the Salzkammergut

9 Days / 8 Nights
Challenging
View over flower meadows down to the Traunsee, in the background the mountains

The shimmering Salzkammergut lakes are an incomparable sight that should be experienced – and the best way to do this is by a cycle tour from lake to lake and from highlight to highlight. Enjoy the fresh mountain air, the clear water, the lush green nature and meet the warm residents of the Salzkammergut. On this 9-day cycling tour without luggage you can casually shake off the hectic pace of everyday life and enjoy something special.

The festival city of Salzburg is a starting point and urban highlight of this tour. Known worldwide for Mozartkugeln and ‘The Sound of Music’, the city on the Salzach has a lot to offer, for example, the delightful old town and the imposing Hohensalzburg Fortress.

From A for Abbey (Michaelbeuren) to Z for Zoo (Hellbrunn) – a whole alphabet of highlights awaits on the Ten Lakes Tour. Nature lovers get their money’s worth on this tour. The Ibmer Moor nature reserve, the deep blue Fuschlsee or the Salzachauen offer relaxation for the senses. From a cultural point of view, you can look forward to the ‘Silent Night’ town of Oberndorf, the ‘Mozart village’ of St. Gilgen and the Kaiservilla in Bad Ischl.

  • The Getreidegasse in Salzburg: When you hear this name the first thing you think about is the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. But the famous Getreidegasse has more to offer. Traditional gastronomy, diverse shopping opportunities and the exciting architecture characterise the landmark of Salzburg’s old town.
  • The turquoise blue Attersee: It is also affectionately known as the ‘Caribbean of the Salzkammergut’ – the crystal clear water of the Attersee is not only a paradise for divers, but also for watersports enthusiasts and those looking for relaxation of all kinds.
  • World Heritage Hallstatt: If you want to go up high, the ‘Skywalk’ platform above Hallstatt is the right place for you. You go deep down again into the oldest salt mine in the world. In between there is a lot of history, cuisine and wonderful views in the famous town centre. Which would you choose?
  • The panorama from the Schafberg over the Wolfgangsee: A 360-degree panorama that will leave you speechless. Those who are lucky enough to experience beautiful weather at the top of the Schafberg will hardly be able to get enough of the view. By the way, you can go up by foot or with the famous Schafbergbahn.

As a starting point for the 9-day tour, you can choose between Salzburg and the Trumer Lakes (in the latter, the stage destinations shift accordingly). The stage lengths vary between leisurely and sporty, the route between flat (on the lakes) and hilly.

Challenging

On the banks of the lakes and at the river Salzach, the routes are completely flat. In between, the terrain is mainly hilly. Depending on the option chosen, approximately one third of the route is on cycle paths and almost all the rest is through fields and on forest paths, farm roads, and quiet side roads. There are only a few short sections on roads with more traffic.
