Cycling break of a couple at the fountain in the old town of Eguisheim

On this journey, you will travel to the heart of the Alsatian viticulture. Colmar is one of the most beautiful cities on the “Weinstraße” (wine route) – and the centre point of this tour. You will cycle along the French wine route over gentle hills, past high alpine pastures and steep slopes. Experience pure idyll at the clear glacier lakes. In Munster, in the Vosges massif, you can try the famous soft Munter cheese. The route leads through the Rhine valley and Breisgau. Discover the fortified baroque city of Neuf-Brisach, built in 1700. Also noteworthy are the Maginot Line fortifications from the Second World War, which can be visited in Marckolsheim. Throughout the medieval town centres you can explore the history and feel the half-timbered romance of Alsace in the charming wine villages.

Colmar is the starting point of this tour with the day trips spanning out from the town. You initially visit the picturesque wine villages: Ribeauville, Hunawihr, Riquewihr and Kientzheim, with an option to also visit Turckheim and Eguisheim. The next day, the Münster is on the agenda. The route then goes through the Rhine valley to Breisach, and along the canal cycle path back to Colmar. The following day, you will cycle along the French wine route to Guebwiller and Mulhouse before taking the train back. You can also take the train to Erstein, and from there cycle along the Rhine-Rhone canal to Strasbourg and return by train to Colmar.

  • Colmar: The cityscape is characterised by medieval charm and the architectural heritage of six hundred years. It is worth an extended tour around it.
  • Munster: Cheese lovers can look forward to tasting the delicious Munter, produced in the Munster valley east of the Vosges mountains. In the cheese museum you can learn everything about the soft French cheese!
  • Strasbourg: The city in northeastern France is the seat of the European Parliament. Since it lies on the border, it draws on both French and German influences. The city centre is a world heritage site.

This is a moderately difficult cycle tour. The cycle trails to the Rhine in Breisach are flat, whilst it is slightly hill on the French wine route and in Sundgau. The route leads along cycle paths and side roads with little traffic. Since there is little traffic outside the town centres, you can cycle in peace and enjoy nature.

Itinerary at a glance

Castles, palaces, and high alpine meadows go hand in hand with the wine-making tradition in Alsace. Medieval charm awaits you in Colmar, and in Strasbourg, German and French influences come together. Don't forget to try Munster cheese!

Welcome to Colmar with its medieval streets and architectural heritage spanning six centuries.

Today you have the choice between two variants, depending on how many kilometres you want to cover. You leave Colmar heading north on a route that reveals wine villages of incredible charm, Ribeauville, Hunawihr, Riquewihr, Kientzheim. The longer option invites you to discover Turckheim and Eguisheim, among the most beautiful villages in France.

Starting in Colmar you will head to the valley of Munster, passing Turckheim and Zimmerbach. Smooth hills, high alps, escarpments and glacial lakes create the versatile landscape of valley Munster, one of the most beautiful of the Vosges massif. The region is popular for its Munster-cheese, take your time to visit the “maison du fromage” with a cheese museum. Cycling back on comfy cycle paths through the nature and small villages.

After the stages in the vineyards, the tour continues comfortably through the Rhine Valley today. In Neuf-Brisach you drive past the octagonal, baroque fortress, which was built around 1700 by Vauban, the fortress builder Louis XIV. After crossing the Rhine bridge, the Breisgau awaits you! In Breisach, you can admire the cathedral, the town centre and the picturesque streets. Back in Marckolsheim/France you can visit a pure fortress bunker of the Second World War Maginot Line. On the channel cycle path you will get back to Colmar.

From Colmar you will follow the French wine route. Charming wine-vilages with lots of Alsatian half-timbered houses and beautiful medieval centres within vineyards are the places to relay, enjoy and to take a break from everyday´s life. From Guebwiller, you can either cycle to Bollwiller or continue to Ungersheim to visit the open-air museum "Ecomusee d'Alsace". The cycle path leads you directly to Mulhouse. You go back to Colmar by train.

You leave by train to Erstein, where you get into the saddle and cycle along the Rhone-Rhine Canal into the heart of the European capital. See the World Heritage-listed historic city centre, the German Quarter or the European Parliament. Return by train from Strasbourg to Colmar.
