The Carnac Stones

Sunset at Gulf of Morbihan

South Brittany

Peninsulas and islands in the mystical Gulf of Morbihan.

The legendary region “Morbihan” (Breton for “little sea”) impresses with its romantic fishing villages, untouched sandy beaches with rugged cliffs, mystical castles and numerous islands. Very profound tidal differences make this fantastic landscape appear different each hour! By bike and by ferry you can explore the islands and the peninsulas in the Gulf of Morbihan in this very relaxed way. The pleasant, South-Breton climate and the sea-breeze that will constantly accompany you will easily let you forget your day-to-day life in no time. Regional meals, sea food and delicacies like crepes, galettes (pancakes made with buckwheat flours usually with a savoury filling) and the “Kouign Amann” (a Breton, round and crusty cake) will delight the hearts of foodies. Our secret tip: enjoy the sun set between the mysterious 6000-year-old druid stones, Tumulus and Dolmen near Carnac. A very special spectacle!

Vannes, the former royal city with its numerous historical and medieval buildings, town walls and towers is definitely worth a visit! Your tour will start and end in this little town.

The day starts at 9am with a welcome briefing and the handing out of the bikes at your arrival hotel. You will cycle to the shipping pier where you will then take a ferry from to Île d’Arz. Take in this small yet charming island by bike!

Today’s cycle tour starts with a short ferry journey from  to the peninsula Séné. After the ride along the Gulf, you will already have reach the second ferry, which takes you to the peninsula(alternatively as well by bike, depends on ferry schedule). You will then cycle along natural beaches until you get to Arzon.

In the morning you will head to the port.  You will then get a boat to the Île aux Moines. You will spend today on this incredible island “Île aux Moines“. Go for a ride on the island as far as you like and when you want. The best thing about it? The island is completely car free! In the late afternoon, the ferries return back to Arzon.

Today you will be going on another ferry ride: explore the northern part of the Gulf! It is a journey of discovery to the world famous rows of more than 10,000 Neolithic standing stones. They are impressive contemporary witnesses of a secret early culture. The loveliest of sandy beaches will invite you for a swim too.

Now you leave the Gulf of Morbihan behind you and cycle to the well-known river “Ria d’Etel“. By bike you will get to Saint-Caldo island. This is a very quiet little place, which is only connected with the mainland through a dune. You will then continue towards Auraw (cat.B), which is today’s destination.

After yesterday’s detour into the back country, today you will cycle back to Vannes. Enjoy yourself whilst having a picnic on the beach or end your holiday by relishing a platter of seafood and a glass of wine…
