Alsace Barbarossa

Rotbart, knights & thermal springs.

In the cycling paradise of the Alsace, Lower Alsace remains a well-kept secret. You pass from the former imperial city of Haguenau through the villages of the Hanau region, to Saverne. The tour rides on through the forest landscape, where the numerous castles of the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa lie hidden, around the lakes of the Northern Vosges Regional Natural Park, to the beautiful timber-frame villages.

Itinerary

Check into the hotel and take the opportunity for sightseeing.

In the north of Haguenau lies the Heiligenwald (“holy forest”). You cycle along small roads through decorated villages with impressive farms, typical for the Hanau region, to Ingwiller.

On this day you will discover the quiet and authentic Alsace. From village to village, you follow the cycle path along the Marne-Rhine Canal, bringing you to Saverne. Saverne, the capital of Roses, will enchant you with its "Little Versailles", a castle in the Versailles style at the foot of the Northern Vosges.

Today you will discover Alsatian Romanesque! One of the most beautiful Romanesque churches from the 11th and 12th centuries is located in Neuwiller. The small town of the Count at Bouxwiller, with its knights' houses, is worth a pause. Following cycle paths and small roads through villages and valleys of the Vosges, you will come to Niederbronn-Les-Bains, a charming spa town.

In Niederbronn-Les-Bains the castle country begins. In the 12th century, Frederick Barbarossa built a series of defensive castles in this part of the Vosges mountains. At Lembach, the destination of your stage for today, lying on the German and French border in the heart of the Northern Vosges, you can visit a fortress of the Maginot line from the Second World War.

Following cycle paths you travel along the river Lauter, from village to village, to Wissembourg

This stage goes over the well known potter village Betschdorf the tour finished and you are returned to the starting point after Haguenau. Departure or extension after the cycle tour.

Tour character

A simple bike tour, also for beginners. You cycle mostly on bike paths, asphaltic agricultural roads and sometimes on side streets with only little traffic.
