Arrival in Hamburg
Travellers are responsible for their transportation to Hamburg and to arrive during the day. The metropolitan city located on the Elbe welcomes you with its maritime flair.
Leave the hectic city behind you and cycle through marshland. The cycle path to Geesthacht runs along the embankment of the former railway. Your destination is Lauenburg, a sailor's town. You can see Lower Saxony in the distance from the high riverbank.
You can cycle to Bleckede on either side of the Elbe River. There is an impressive exhibition in the castle of Bleckede. Continue downstream along the river to Hitzacker. The view from the dam onto the hills on the opposite riverbank is beautiful.
The Elbe twists and turns. Follow the river on bike paths along or on the dike. There is an impressive fort in Dömitz for you to visit, if you like, and lovingly restored castle is waiting for your visit in Lenzen. Today's destination is Wittenberge in the Prignitz district.
The vast floodplains are an ideal breeding site and resting place for many birds. You can observe more than 30 stork nests in Rührstädt. Continue along the path to where the Havel flows into the Elbe and notice the Havelberg Cathedral from afar.
The Havel Cycle Route starts in Havelberg and runs along the many bends of the river through the nature reserve. The unspoilt nature of the floodplain forests accompanies you on your way. Your next stop is in Rathenow, the 'City of Optics'.
The Havel provides an important link in the waterway connections between its source in the Müritz National Park and its mouth in Havelberg. The city of Brandenburg is the cradle of Mark Brandenburg and bears the same name as its state.
A trip to the Old Town of Werder should definitely be scheduled in on your way along the beautiful route. The palace and castles in Potsdam's Sanssouci Park and Babelsberg are must-see attractions.
Once you have passed the Glienicke Bridge you will have left the capital of Brandenburg behind you. It is still quiet near Wannsee and Grunewald, and the hustle and bustle of the nation's capital is still a ways off. Cycle on the bike path along the Spree through the Government District to downtown Berlin.
