The Main Cycle Path begins in beautiful Bamberg. After a leisurely tour of the city, you cycle along the Main on the bike. Between grand castles and palaces, magnificent churches and dark green forests you can explore the diverse region between Bavaria and Hesse. Your constant companion and guide: the Main!

There is almost no more culture and history than on the Main Cycle Path. One thing is clear: the landscape along the Main is one of the most culturally rich regions in Bavaria and Hesse. Through the Franconian wine country, you cycle to the charming towns on the Main. The Imperial city of Bamberg, the city of Würzburg, Miltenberg and Ochsenfurt, to name a few, are among the most beautiful stops on your cycle tour.

Of course, one thing can’t be forgotten: culinary delights! Because Franconia has a lot to offer when it comes to cuisine. Cosy beer gardens, Franconian wine bars and regional delicacies will make your heart beat faster. Our recommendation: just dive in and enjoy!

  • Würzburg: When you arrive in the lively baroque and cultural city of Würzburg you have enough time to explore the city. You will be amazed – one tourist highlight after another awaits you at every corner. You should definitely visit the following sights on your tour of the old town: the Residenz, the old Main Bridge and the St. Killians Cathedral. You will love it!
  • Aschaffenburg: Through a wonderful wine landscape you roll closer to the Spessart metropolis of Aschaffenburg. The city is particularly well known for its historical wealth and buildings. On a walk through Aschaffenburg, you will notice the historic walls and the impressive monuments and museums. Recommendation: A trip to Johannisburg Castle!

Attention cyclists! You can be happy because the route runs almost entirely over flat cycle paths along the riverbank. You will cover around 335 kilometres over eight days. The daily stages are between 40 and 65 kilometres. In short: this cycle tour is ideal for beginners. Interested? Hop on the saddle and off you go!

Itinerary at a glance

Taste regional beer in the imperial city of Bamberg before making your way along the Main River into the Franconian wine country. Stroll along Domstraße in Würzburg, and visit Johannisburg Castle in Aschaffenburg.

Start the trip with a walk of the city of Emperor Heinrich II, who dreamed of Bamberg, realised and loved it and who was interred in the dome.

You will be cycling through the valley, following the Main. Today’s stage will leisurly take you through wine villages and orchards along the river. Later, you will cycle through Haßfurt and finally reach Schhweinfurt in Lower Franconia, with its beautiful Holy Trinity church.

In the pilgrimage church Maria im Weingarten, which was built in the 15th century, you will find the famous floating Madonna in the Rosary by Riemenschneider. Volkach is the centre of the Maindreieck wine region.The Main continues meandering along the valley towards Kitzingen, which is famous as it boasts the oldest wine cellar in Germany.

The river and along with it the Main cycle path, makes a dramatic turn and lead you towards the Franconian metropolis of Würzburg. You shouldn't miss the Baroque Castle here and the World Heritage Site of the Würzburger Residenz Palace, which towers high above the town. Also worth to look at are the Old Bridge and the traiditional vineyards within the city. The way onwards to Zellingen and Karlstadt takes you along nice and easy paths.

The Main triangle is now followed by the Main quadrangle, the first corner of which is Gemünden. Here you are already in the Spessart Nature Park, which you can wonderfully overlook from the Scherenburg ruins. The route then continues in ever tighter curves through wooded hills. At Rothenfels, the Romanesque castle watches over the narrow valley and your path; Marktheidenfeld, situated between the Main River and the Spessart, is all about Franconian wine culture.

You should visit Wertheim Castle, which towers over the town and gives you a magnificent panoramic view. After the next river turn you will recognize Stadtprozelten with one of the most beautiful castle ruins just above town, the Henneburg castle. Your destination for today, Miltenberg, is famous for its picturesque old marketplace, and for the Gasthaus zum Riesen inn, which already housed emporor Barbarossa.

Today, you will be cycling alongside to ships on the river Main and first reach Miltenberg with its vineyards and local, traditional wine pups. Through the magnificent landscape you cycle onwards to toda's final destination Aschaffenburg, the "Spessart metropolis". From afar you can see the four towers of Johannisburg castle.
