The Covered Bridges in Strasbourg

Three countries, three cultures and a wonderful Mediterranean climate await you in the Rhine valley between the Alps, Black Forest and the Vosges Mountains. Comfortable routes take you to wonderful destinations, which alone make the trip worthwhile. The picturesque city of Basel is the starting point for your tour. The Rhine passes through beautiful natural landscapes, the impressive mountain ranges of the Black Forest, always firmly in view of the Baden wine route to arrive to Müllheim. On the other side of the Rhine, Colmar is waiting, the capital of Alsace wines. Through picturesque and typically French countryside, the River Lauch and the many canals flow round the old town with its cathedral, tanners' quarter and the former fishermen's' quarter of Little Venice. At the foot of the Vosges Mountains, you cycle along the French wine route, through dreamy villages with many Alsatian timber-frame houses and almost perfectly preserved mediaeval town centers.

Itinerary at a glance

Along the Rhine, you'll encounter wild and romantic floodplain landscapes, views of the Black Forest, and the Baden Wine Route before reaching the French Alsace region. In addition to Basel and Strasbourg, the charming cities of Freiburg and Colmar will captivate you.

Take some time to explore the colourful variety in the lively city Basel! Worth seeing are the magnificent old town, fabulous museum collections and a rich architectural heritage.

On the Rhine it is ideal to cycle. When you leave Basel, follow the bicycle markings to the north, parallel to the Rhine. You will reach Müllheim, where you can visit the Markgräfler Museum and the church of St. Martin with its 14th century frescoes. From Müllheim, Badenweiler is very easy to reach: its castle and the remains of Roman thermal baths are worth a detour.

After the visit of the villa Urbana and the Maltese’s Castle in Heitersheim you will cycle to Bad Krozingen and his Mineral Thermal springs, before you arrived to Freiburg in the Black Forest. From the top of the castle hill you can watch the sunset over the roofs of the city and enjoy a beautiful panorama of the Vosges Mountains.

The 13th century Breisach Cathedral towers imposingly over the bank of the Rhine. You cross the Rhine to Neuf-Brisach in Alsace, a 17th century, octagonal fortified town. The day ends wonderfully in the beautiful town of Colmar, one of the most delightful cities on the French wine route. Don't miss a walk through the superbly preserved old town and visit the Unterlinden Museum, home to the Issenheim Altar, a masterpiece of Western art.

From Colmar, head to the plains of Alsace and on to the Wine Route, a mythical route with exceptional landscapes and famous wine towns. The villages Eguisheim, Turckheim, Kaysersberg und Riquewihr belong to the most impressing and famous cities on the French this region. On easily hilly roads you cycle through the romantic vineyards.

Along the wine road you will discover the villages of Barr, Andlau and its abbey, Bergheim, Ribeauvillé, Hunawihr. Make a break and taste the local wine!

From there, along the cycle track on the banks of the Bruche canal, you will reach the capital of Europe: Strasbourg. The magnificent Gothic cathedral, the city center, which has been declared a World Heritage Site, as well as the art of living and gastronomy will end your trip in style.
