Itinerary

Rostock is the perfect location for the start of your tour to the Danish islands. Travellers are responsible for their transportation to the destination hotel in Rostock.

During the course of the morning, cycle or take the commuter train (fare payable on-site) to the harbour. Take the ferry to Gedser. The ferry ride takes approx. 2 hours. Cycle to Marielyst and Nykøbing. Many artists, small galleries and museums invite you to stop in on your way to Nykøbing.

Along the Guldborgsunds, you cycle up to the island of Zealand. Neastved, one of the oldest cities in the country. Take a detour to the castle Gavno. On Gavno, you experience history, art and nature. The castle park is home to more than ½ million bulbs, a rose garden and many rare species of plants and trees. Nearby Beastveds, enjoy the candy country and a glassworks to your visit. Overnight in or near Naestved.

Cycle northwest through the Great Belt where everyone is in a great holiday mood. Swimming areas, restaurants, and cafés characterise the surroundings. Karesbaekstorp is filled with art galleries. Before continuing to Korsør, enjoying some freshly smoked fish in the smokehouse is necessary.

Just West of Slagelse you will find an excellent replica from Viking times, the Trelleborg. On route, pass Lake Tissø, known for numerous bird species, which find their home there. Your destination is Kalundborg in the North. The church with five towers and the Old Town, Højby, with its crooked town homes, have been very well preserved.

Your cycling tour takes you to the coast and fjords at Roskilde today. First, Iselfjord, then Roskildefjord. The tombs of many Danish kings and queens are found in the Roskilde Cathedral. If you like, follow the Vikings as you row or sail across the fjord in a Viking replica.

Today’s stretch, the last stretch of your tour, is a little shorter and takes you back to the capital. Spend the afternoon in a quaint café or visit the Tivoli Gardens. Turn in your rental bike and enjoy your evening. Overnight in Copenhagen.

Travellers are responsible for their departure on their own. You can take the train from Copenhagen to Hamburg or to Gedser, and then the ferry to Rostock, if you are travelling home from Germany.

Tour character

Denmark is very flat and sometimes a little bit hilly. The route goes nearly exclusive on side roads, farm roads, domain and forest track; partly asphaltic, partly nature paths.

Bike Tour
My wife and I really enjoyed this ride. The weather was perfect (with little rain) and the terrain through which we cycled was consistently interesting, varied, historical and beautiful. The bike trails were relatively flat, although at times windy. The location and quality of the accommodation was very good; several rooms were small in size and so not as easy to expand our 2 cases; some other rooms were huge and very spacious. The staff at each nightly stop were most courteous and helpful and the quality of the breakfasts was very good; they provided ample sustenance for the daily ride ahead. The bikes provided were of good quality and we experienced no trouble -no punctures or mechanical issues. The maps and route information (plus cycle signage on the trail) were excellent and in the 9 days cycling we only had issues following these directions / signs on about 4 occasions. We clocked up about 635 kms by taking the optional riding extensions. Overall this ride is highly recommended.
