Thuringians Modern Classics

Great musicians and new landscapes

During this varied round tour you will discover the most recently created German landscapes and splendid historic cities of Thuringia and Saxony. Your journey takes you through an area that was known in recent decades, not just by its Scenic beauty and high recreational value, but by its industry and mining. Since the 1990s, these regions are experiencing a true rebirth. After the end of the coal mining began an extensive restoration and renaturation. Thus, the Leipzig Neuseenland, the new landscape Ronneburg emerged, the area around the Geiseltalsee and the Elster-Luppe-Aue, all of them are today known as recreational areas, water sports center and even nature reserves.

The stations of this journey are rich in tradition, have a lot to offer and shine with names like Johann Sebastian Bach, Richard Wagner, Otto Dix, Carl Zeiss, Friedrich Schiller, Georg Friedrich Händel and more. Along with the architectural highlights from various periods, such as the Naumburg Cathedral or the castle Altenburg, you can expect a diverse cultural mix on this tour.

Itinerary

Welcome to the world-famous trade fair city Leipzig! Wander on the traces of the composer Johann Sebastian Bach and saunter trough the beautiful centre with its unique atmosphere.

You start your tour with a pleasant loop to get you warmed up. The Elster and Saale bike paths will take you out of the exhibition city. These bike paths will take you past idyllic meadows, alluvial forests and sleepy settlements. You will arrive in Halle from the South. Halle, the town where Handel had lots of his training, is located on the River Saale and did not get bombed much at all in WW2 and therefore has a large historical area remaining today. It is worth visiting the free standing Red Tower, the four-towered Marienkirche (a church) and the towerless cathedral.

You leave Halle by cycling along the Saale bike path towards the South. Today’s first highlight is the royal town of Merseburg after a lovely ride. The town is impressive thanks to its cathedral and the Merseburger palace. In Bad Dürrenberg, you should visit the 850m long graduation tower. You then cycle through alluvial forests and meadows on your way to Weißenfels where you can see the Neu-Augustusburg palace. After this you have not got far to go until you arrive in Naumburg. From afar, you will be greeted by Naumburg’s biggest treasure - its four towered cathedral.

Today you continue by cycling along the Saale bike path, which means that you will go through Bad Kösen, Saaleck and Camberg. Your route will take you past steep vineyards, the romantic Dornburger palaces and traditional wine taverns. Don’t miss out on the chance to try the royal regional wine. Today’s destination is the modern univerity town of Jena. There you can expect not only the oldest Planetarium but also the JenTower skyscraper and the GalaxSea spa.

Restrengthend you start today’s stage on the ‘Thüringer Städtekette’ bike path. You leave Jena by heading South and soon you will arrive at the idyllic Zeitzgrund, a nature preserve. We recommend a first break in Bad Klosterlausnitz, which is a state recognised health spa that has healing spring waters and a lovely spa park. You continue via Hartmannsdorf to Bad Köstritz - a wonderful little town with a palace and parks. The last kilometres are easy cycling to Gera. Here there is a museum about the life and work of Otto Dix, a painter. There is also an extensively refurbished town centre and large parks. An insider tip is to visit the caves.

Today you keep cycling along the ‘Thüringer Städtekette’. You quickly get to the rather different landscape near Ronneburg. which has been decorated with many diffferent landscaping styles in connection with the BUGA 2007 (a national gardening show). An example is the ‘Drachenschwanzbrücke’ (the dragon’s tail bridge). The next well known place is Schmölln, which is very well-kept. It has a button as well as a regional museum. Today’s destination is the old town of Altenburg, which is over 1000 years old. In the residence city you should visit the admirable Altenburg palace, which has a playing card museum, the Marienkirche (a church) with its red points and the historical Altenburg town hall.

Today is the last stage of the tour. You cycle downhill past Regis-Breitingen and Rötha to Markleenberg before you get to Leipzig. You cycle along the Pleiße cycle path through the Leipzig Neuseenland, which is a wonderful region that has been created recently. Lakes and alluvial forests have been created in a former mining area. In the late afternoon you will get to Leipzig.

Tour character

Beautiful route on well-developed cycle paths. Short sections on economic routes and secondary roads. Overall a comfortable tour with a few climbs.
