View of Poglinano

Apulia, the heel of the world famous boot on the map, is the south-easternmost region of Italy. This strip of land in the sea offers a wide range of kilometres of enchanting coastline. A fascinating landscape awaits you between the Adriatic and the Ionian Sea, as well as impressive architecture. For those who would like to immerse themselves in the past, Apulia offers a variety of historical sites that tell of its ancient culture: from prehistory to Magna Graecua and the Roman Empire to the Renaissance and the splendor or the Baroque. We are convinced that this cycle holiday will make your Italy-hearts leap for joy. Experience the pure Italian lifestyle in just eight days.

The starting point of the cycle holiday is Alberobello, home of the ‘Trulli’. The special thing about a rally is that you spend the entire holiday in the same hotel and embark on daily tours from there. Let yourself be surprised by new highlights every day, and immerse yourself in the popular Italian dolce vita.

  • The Trulli of Apulia – Ancient cone-roofed white stone dwellings built without any mortar. They are so unique that they were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996.
  • Ostuni: On the fourth day, you cycle south from Alberobello to the so-called ‘white city’. Since all the houses, except the brown church, are white, it has this special name. You can see the unique city from afar because it was built on a hill.
  • Grotte di Castellana: The stalactite cave with the grotto labyrinth is located in Castellana and is the largest underground tourist attraction in Italy. A wonderful fairy tale world awaits you at the depth of approx. 70 metres.
  • Matera: One UNESCO World Heritage Site follows the next. On the final day of your holiday you will discover Matera, the cultural capital of 2019. What is special about this city are its cave settlements, which are unique in Europe.

You like to cycle, but do not want to miss out on enjoyment? Then the Apulia cycle rally is perfect for you. Because Apulia is not only the south-easternmost region in Italy, but also the flattest. Therefore, apart from a few ups and downs, the bike route leads you mainly on paved side roads on flat terrain. Pure enjoyment!

Itinerary at a glance

The base for your tour is Alberobello, famous for its white stone houses called Trulli. The spectacular sights include the Castellana Caves, the cliffs of Polignano a Mare, and the cultural capital of Matera.

This small town in the province of Bari is famous for Trulli stone constructions. The Trulli of Alberobello are part of the UNESCO World Heritage sites list since 1996.

Starting from the famous town of Trullis, you will explore the surrounding area by bike. Through wide olive groves, vineyards, fruit and almond trees you cycle to Noci, a small town with a historic centre. Return to Alberobello.

Today takes you on a beautiful circuit to the spectacular caves of Castellana. The stalactite cave with a labyrinth of caves is the largest underground tourist attraction in Italy and can be visited with a guided tour. The wide halls offer wondrous rock formations, stalagmites and stalactites can be seen everywhere, the creation of which took nature thousands of years. On the way back you can enjoy the view of the Adriatic Sea.

Today’s tour takes you from Alberobello, through the Valle d'Itria valley, to Locorotondo. The fertile valley is one of the most beautiful cultural landscapes in the south. Curved walls of raised field stones tame nature. The name Locorotondo literally means round place. The town is also known as "La Città del Vino Bianco" (white wine town). Further you cycle to Cisternino and Ostuni. The light-coloured wreath of houses that adorns the tops of the three hills of the "Città Bianca" can already be seen from afar. Enjoy the magnificent view of the nearby sea. In the afternoon there will be a transfer by shuttle bus to Alberobello.

As an alternative to the rest day, a bicycle tour to the baroque town of Martina Franca is also available. The town is located right in the middle between the Ionian and Adriatic Seas in the southeast of the Murgia. Worth seeing are the Palazzo Ducale and the Basilica di San Martino.

From Alberobello you cycle to Monopoli, the most important port between Bari and Brindisi. Continue to Polignano a Mare. The pearl on the southern Costa di Bari is captivating because of its extraordinary location: it clings picturesquely to the edges of a steep coast and offers fantastic views of the emerald green sea. Stroll through the narrow streets of the old town or enjoy a day's bath before taking the shuttle bus back to Alberobello.

Today’s destination is the cultural capital Matera 2019 in the Basilicata region. It is also known as the "City of the Sassi". The old town consists partly of cave settlements and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. The impressive collections of cave dwellings form independent quarters that are unique in Europe.
