From Brixen to Villach.
- 8 Days / 7 Nights
- Self-guided tour
Arrival in Brixen
From Brixen you’re passing monastery Neustift and at the Mühlbacher Klause (former boarder post) you reach Pustertal Valley. The Valley forms once an ancient gate between provinces Rätien and Norikum. Along river Rienz you come to Bruneck.
If you still have energy you can cycle along the cycle path through Tauferer Ahrntal Valley to Sand in Taufers and visit the famous castle there.
Before you leave Bruneck we recommend to visit the museum of popular art in Dietenheim, on of two open-air museums, which documented the rural life in southern Tyrol, culture and its traditions.Today you still follow river Reinz. Slightly uphill the path leads you via Olang (with its beautiful view over the mountain Kronplatz) into Hochpustertal Valley, where river Drau has its source. For ambitious cyclists the possibility for an excursion to one of the appealing lakes supplies. Lake Toblacher See and Lake Dürrensee offers refreshing recovery after a varying cycle day. Lake Dürrensee is very close to the most famous peaks of the Dolomite Alps – the “Drei Zinnen” (the three pinnacles).
First Innichen (a museum worth seeing; a cathedral built in a Romanesque style) and then a comfortable descent from Sillian to Lienz, where the Isel and Drau confluence occurs. (Museum of local history “Schloss Bruck” – excavation site Aguntum). With 2000 hours of sunlight a year this is the sunniest holiday resort of Austria.
On the tracks of old Roman trade routes leading to Oberdrauburg, which is the city of custom with “Perchtenmuseum”, “Almmuseum” and an old mill which is still running.
You cycle through marvellous landscapes to Spittal or “Millstätter Lake” (fishing museum). There is the opportunity to swim in the beautiful “Millstätter Lake”. The “Kulturpromenade” (culture promenade) of Oberkärnten – Spittal/ Drau (Castle Porcia with a museum of folk culture, and comedy plays put on in July and August),
Villach – the second biggest city of Carinthia and its immediate surroundings offer numerous sights (mushroom museum, the dolly world of Elli-Riehls, the ruin Landskron) and inviting lakes like “Ossiacher Lake” and “Faaker Lake”.
Departure or extension
It is an easy bike tour. The bike path follows the river Drau on the first bike day. The path is mostly asphalted or has fine, solid gravel. The longest incline from Brixen to Schabs (approx. 5 km) at the beginning of the first stage could be bridged with a journey by train. From Toblach the route is mostly flat or slightly downhill.
