Itinerary

In the evening welcome meeting and rental bike fitting. This first main town in Italy offers numerous sights and recommend you take a first stroll.

Hotel (example):

Art Hotel Boston

You leave Turin today and continue on the cycle path along the Po riverside. We suggest you have a first stop at Chivasso at the latest. This little town on the river Po perfectly conveys the Italian way of life with its street cafés. After that you leave the longest river in Italy and soon you encounter your first vines and softly rolling hills. As you continue you always have a nice view onto Lake Viverone until you reach where you will be staying this evening, situated directly at the lakeside. Nice!

Hotel (example):

Hotel Marina

During the first few kilometres there are a few short ascents to tackle. However marvellous views back onto the lake more than make up for the effort. After that, you return to the lowlands, here the fertile land along the river Elvo is mainly used agriculturally. You cycle through wheat, corn and sunflower fields along beautiful paths all the way to Vercelli, with its towers visible from afar. In the evening you are spoilt by the well-known hotel restaurant with specialities from the Piedmont region!

Hotel (example):

Hotel Garibaldi

Today is all about the famous risotto rice. In spring the region is filled with flooded fields as far as the eye can see and turned into a landscape with countless ‚lakes’. After that the terraced areas create a lush green ‚carpet’. You cycle on lovely and quiet little roads along the irrigation canals and the river Sesia until Casale Monferrato, a Baroque town situated on the river Po and at the foot of vineyards.

Hotel (example):

Hotel Candiani

Along the final rice fields on the river Po you leave Casale. After that the soft hills of Monferrato begin and the vines with the same name will accompany you for a bit of the route. Little villages with a medieval feel invite for a break, before you reach the Tanaro river plain. This river also runs through today’s where you will be staying tonight in Alessandria, where we recommend you enjoy an evening aperitif accompanied by little delicacies on the Piazza della Libertà

Hotel (example):

Hotel Alle Due Buoi Rossi

In the Tanaro river plain, a large variety of fruit is grown. Any tasty fruit – apples, pears, peaches,... – you find directly en-route. Hazelnut bushes finally lead to the wine growing area. You cycle on the ’Strada del Vino Astesana’ with marvellous views onto the vineyards. You spend the night in Asti today, not only well known for the sparkling wine with the same name, but also for the famous Palio-competition, which – just like in Tuscany - is a race for supremacy on horseback.

Hotel (example):

Hotel Aleramo

Remote paths lead along little creeks back to the start of the tour. Along the way you come across sleepy little villages and cycle past vineyards enticing you to a glass of wine. In Chieri (at the latest) we recommend you drink a toast to your trip, because from here you take the train back to Turin.

Tour character

You mainly cycle on side roads with very little traffic. Overall very easy terrain with only a few ascents. Overall asphalted, only short segments sometimes on gravel paths. When entering or leaving towns as well as on short connecting sections, heavier traffic is unfortunately unavoidable.

Good cycling route
The whole tour went very well. It was very easy with to follow the route with GPS route on my bike gps. I used a road/racing bike and it was no problem. I can recommend using a road bike for this trip. I could store my bike case in the Torino hotel for the whole week The area around Alba/Asti was my favourite with beautiful views along the hills. Piedmont is in nice weather and fruits are ready for picking in september. I saw alot of kiwi, apples, nut trees, and especially grapes.

Ciclismo divertimento in Piemonte
