Did you know that Sweden’s capital city is spread across fourteen islands? Well, now you do, it will be no surprise that during this cycle tour you will spend almost all of your time with a view across the water. That is because there is always either the sea or one of the many lakes right nearby. Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s old town and has a lot to offer with its cobbled alleyways, inviting cafes, crooked houses, and the royal castle! Whilst tracing Swedish history from the times of the Vikings up until nowadays, there sure are a lot of interesting things to explore such as Drottningholm palace, Stockholm’s parks, the town of Vaxholm and the idyllic nature which lies all around Stockholm!

Itinerary at a glance

Stockholm is your base for excursions to the archipelago capital Vaxholm, Drottningholm Palace, and the seaside resort of Saltsjöbaden. Explore the capital city and visit the amusement park Gröna Lund or the Astrid Lindgren Museum.

Take your first stroll through Sweden's capital city and explore some og the many sights and tourist attractions.

On the first day, you cycle alongside the Mälaren, the thirs largest lake in Sweden, which then leads you to Lövon island. This island is a World Cultural Heritage site and you will find Drottningholm palace here. This palace is where the Swedish Royal family grew up. Afterwards the bike tour heads back towards the city. You cycle over many bridges which connect different neighbourhoods of the town with each other. You cycle through the old town of Södermalm, which was formerly a working-class area but is now where the hipsters and designers live you are cycling through the old town and Skeppsholmen back to your hotel.

What would be a trip to Stockholm without visiting the impressing skerries? This is exactly why todays stage leds you with the bike to Vaxholm. This idyllic small town describes itself as the capital of skerries and is waiting for you with lots of restaurants, little shops and a fortress from the 16th century. Back to Stockholm you get by a ferry, which approx. takes 1 hour and is not included in the price.

Today’s tour leads you to Skogskyrkogården (woodland cemetery), which according to UNESCO is an outstanding example for the merge of architecture and landscape. Learn more about the cemetery in the visitor centre, or book a guided tour (not included). Your goal is the idyllic bathing village of Saltsjöbaden before you return to Stockholm.

You cycle to a peninsula, called Djurgården and you pass the Astrid-Lindgren Museum Junibacken and the Vasa Museum. The historical district of Djurgårdstaden is situated behind the amusement park called Gröna Lund. Wherever you look you see falun red houses! You cycle past an open-air museum called Skansen as well as Prince Eugen’s Waldemarsudde and then you continue towards the waterside. From the water’s edge, you get a good view of the harbour entrance and the boats. You then arrive at the southern side of the Djurgårdens. The bike tour continues from Blockhushudden via Djurgårdens northern foothills before you then cycle back.

Easy

You cycle on well-signposted bike and gravel paths as well as side roads with little traffic. Coarse gravel and easier road conditions can also be expected in some areas. Short stretches on roads with more traffic. Flat to slightly hilly route.
