Where the sun is working overtime

The sparkling Lake Neusiedl between Austria and Hungary is a beautiful patch of earth, which is often kissed by the sun. With an annual total of 2,000 hours of sunshine, Lake Neusiedl is one of the sunniest regions in Austria – and that is noticeable among the countryside and people. One of the most famous inhabitants of Burgenland is a very rare guest – the stork. Watch the proud bird in its natural environment and cycle through the enchanting landscape of this magical lake.

Useful information about your cycle tour at Lake Neusiedl

The climate at Lake Neusiedl

Over 300 days of sunshine per year and very little rainfall is good news for our guests who want to take their next cycling holiday in the area around Lake Neisiedl. The Pannonian climate is responsible for this, it usually displaces thunderclouds away from the lake to the north. That means sun, sun, sun wherever you look. The lake acts as a cooling balance. So it doesn’t get too hot either. Cycle tours on Lake Neusiedl are therefore highly recommended in every season.

The cuisine around Lake Neusiedl

Would you like a refreshing splash (wine spritzer) after cycling? Lake Neuseidl and its winemakers impress guests and locals with their abilities as a wine region! And where good wine is produced, you can usually also find outstanding cuisine. The food in Burgenland is influenced by many different cuisines. Of course, neighbouring Hungary exerts a special influence on the simple but very fine cuisine of Burgenland. Dishes such as Pörkölt (gulasch), langos, cabbage strudel, or paprika chicken should be sampled, as well as the famous Somloer dumplings or fruity cherry strudel. Yum!

Rust – the hometown of the baby-bringing stork

Yes, it’s true! In Rust at Lake Neusiedl, children are brought from the stork. Or something like that…the fact is that Rust is the city of storks. Since about 1910, the rare bird has populated the small town on Lake Neusiedl from April to August. However, due to fewer food sources, there is a noticeable decline in the animals. The winter home of the lucky birds is located in Africa. The city of Rust has even set up a stork club whose mission is to protect migratory birds and provide them with feeding spots. Currently there are about 20 pairs of storks living in Rust, who are busy working on their own offspring. In the meantime, there is even a stork nursing station in Rust, which cares for sick storks so that they can soon return home to their nests.

Did you know…

  • …that Lake Neusiedl is the largest steppe lake in Europe?
  • …that the lake is also called the sea of the Viennese? On the one hand because of its size, on the other hand because of its high salt cont

  • …that the lake is only 1.80 metres deep at its lowest point?
  • …that the Hungarian word for Lake Neusiedl literally means swamp?

Eurobike – because you should have nothing to complain about on holiday!
