Beach grass on the North Sea coast

Hallig Hooge, Sylt, and Rømø take center stage as the unequivocal stars and inspirations for this extraordinary cycling adventure. The echoing calls of seagulls will accompany you as you navigate these splendid islands on your bicycle. Can you already sense the gentle breeze brushing against your skin from the North Sea? Do you catch the scent of the salty air, and does the vastness of the sea evoke a feeling of freedom within you?

Sylt? Yes, everyone knows this beautiful North Sea island! But what about its Danish sister island, Rømø? Have you ever visited Hallig Hooge? Each island is more enchanting than the other. Set out armed with your bicycle, a camera, and perfectly prepared travel documents to discover the splendid cycling paths that will lead you to these three island beauties. It's rarely strenuous! At most, when the wind decides to blow a bit too strongly in the wrong direction.

  • „North Friesland“: Cycle through numerous nature reserves and past the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park with its unique Halligen. Wondering what that is? These are small, barely protected islands that are often submerged by the sea. One of them is Hallig Hooge.
  • „Sylt“: Germany's most famous island certainly lives up to its reputation. Spend a relaxing day on one of the long beaches, enjoy a delicious fish sandwich, and let the salty sea breeze tickle your nose.
  • „Husum Harbor“: You should not miss this special spectacle. The hustle and bustle, colorful houses, delicious North Sea crabs and many pubs, stores and restaurants await your visit.

This eight-day cycling journey in Northern Germany will pass by in the blink of an eye. The landscapes, stage locations, and attractions are diverse, offering something for every taste. The daily stages, ranging from 10 to 60 kilometers, are suitable for every fitness level, as the routes are predominantly flat. Cycling is mainly done on well-developed bike paths and lightly trafficked side roads.

Can you already smell the salty sea air? Then off to the North Sea coast!

Itinerary at a glance

The Wadden Sea provides a magnificent natural spectacle in North Frisia. Watch the bustling activity and tides at the harbor of Husum while enjoying a portion of North Sea shrimps. Sylt offers picturesque villages and beaches.

The small town of Husum is characterized by the interplay of the tides. The North Sea reaches as far as the inland port. Watch the tides very closely in the middle of the town. Stroll through the narrow streets and alleys and marvel at the picturesque, differently colored gabled houses.

The first stage of your cycle tour to Sylt takes you - always along the dyke - through North Friesland. You cycle along the North Sea Cycle Path through numerous nature reserves and bird sanctuaries. You are sure to come across numerous sheep frolicking on the dykes. To your left, you can see the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park with its unique Halligen islands. Treat yourself to a break on the dyke or take a detour along the boardwalk to Hamburger Hallig for a cup of coffee and enjoy the fantastic view before you reach your stage destination.

The Halligen are small marsh islands in the Wadden Sea, which are completely flooded several times a year. Thanks to the terps - artificial mounds - the islands can be inhabited all year round. You and your bike take the ferry to Hallig Hooge, the largest Hallig in the North Sea. In the storm surge cinema, you can experience a typical storm surge on a large screen. Enjoy the unique landscape before taking the ferry back to the mainland.

First you get on the train with your bikes and drive to Sylt. You arrange the day according to your wishes. For example, the Hörnum lighthouse in the south of the island is waiting for you. Sylt is also ideal for a relaxing day at the beach. In any case, try the fish roll typical for the region or a piece of frieze cake! Afterwards you go with the ferry to the Danish island Rømø.

Today you visit the southernmost and largest Danish North Sea island. The sandy beach of the popular vacation island is the longest and widest of its kind in all of Northern Europe and is also easily navigable by bike. You can reach the Danish mainland via an approximately ten kilometer long dam. Once you arrive in Tønder, you will enjoy the evening in the city, which is characterized by baroque and rococo architecture with its well-preserved patrician houses.

You leave Denmark on the North Sea coastal cycle path. In Neukirchen, just over the border, the Emil-Nolde-Museum is worth a visit. The exhibition offers insights into the life and work of one of the most important painters of Expressionism. On quiet paths you cycle relaxed through meadows and fields to Niebüll. Once there, we recommend a visit to the natural history museum.

From Dagebüll you cycle directly along the coast. Take a detour to the Hamburger Hallig (+ 8 km) on the way. The small peninsula is very easy to reach by bike. At the end of the Hallig, a restaurant invites you to stay a while and enjoy the views. In Husum, your destination for the day, the town's most famous son, Theodor Storm, is commemorated at every turn. The writer once described Husum as a gray town by the sea. Far from it, because the colorful and lively harbor town is neither gray nor monotonous.
