The hilly countryside between the Danube and Lake Constance provides a wonderful panorama for cycling tours. The water sparkles in the lake whilst the Alpine backdrop radiates tranquillity. Another idyllic place is the Federsee, where there are Bronze Age stilt settlements and archaeological finds from the Palaeolithic age. You will also cycle past fairy-tale high moors and fruit orchards. Beer connoisseurs will get their money’s worth in the hop-growing areas. The region’s magnificent castles are culturally rich. If you love winter sports, take a detour to the pretty tour of Isny. After hours of exercise on your bike and sightseeing, you can relax in the thermal or mud spa.

The cycling holiday starts in Konstanz. At the start, take a ferry ride to Meersburg and a tour past Immenstaad and Markdorf to Bad Saulgau. Then the route leads to Ulm and Bad Wurzach, before going to Wangen im Allgäu. The following stages are Kressborn and Lindau – on the way to the festival city of Bregenz. Through the Rhine delta the route continues in Switzerland along the lake to Konstanz.

Konstanz: Gaze at the full splendour of the world of flora on a trip to the blooming island of Mainau, whilst the exotic underwater world is presented in the Sea Life Aquarium. You can end the evening in the oldest district of Niederburg.

Wangen im Allgäu: Wander through the picturesque old town.The former imperial city contains over 20 stone figurine fountains. To round off your tour, visit the historic chapels and churches.

Lindau: The city on Lake Constance is renowned for it’s picturescque old town island. From the Lindau lighthouse you have a spectacular view of the lake and the mountains. The statue of the Bavarian Lion at the harbour is also worth seeing.

Bregenz: The capital of the Vorarlberg region has the world-famous lake stage on which the annual arts festival takes place.

This cycling holiday is ideal for experienced cyclists who are fit and love sporting challenges. In order to enjoy the cycling, you should be in very good physical condition. There are both flat and hilly routes in the Allgäu. The cycle paths are asphalted and lead along quiet side streets and beautiful nature trails.

Itinerary at a glance

At Lake Constance (known as Bodensee in German), sparkling water awaits along with the Mainau Flower Island and Sea Life Constance. Visit the pile-dwelling settlements at Lake Federsee and the moorlands of Upper Swabia, while hop fields and apple trees accompany your journey to Bregenz.

Take the opportunity to visit the island of Mainau, stroll through the old town of Constance or visit the aquarium or Archaeological Museum.

With the ferry to Meersburg and along the sea to Immenstaad and MarkdorfPastoral economy and nature determine the stage after the first part.

The basin of Lake Federsee is an ancient culture area, archaeologists still make significant discoveries from the Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age lake dwellings.

Soft hills, high moors and parched lakes are coining the route in northern Upper Swabia. But also culture is not missed out, Ochsenhausen offers the impressing Benedictine abbey. Your aim is well-known as mud spa, in a mudpack or in the thermal spa you can relax felicitous.

Today’s route is shorter, but you will discover Allgäu, which is not less ambitious. Palace Zeil lies imposing above Leutkirch, well-worth seeing is the winter sport village Isny, comfortable is the evening in the well preserved old city of Wangen.

First you cycle through one of the most important hops growing areas in Germany, afterwards apple trees and fruit orchards are defining the landscape. In Kressbronn you reach Lake Constance, along the waterside to Lindau and onto Bregenz, which is capital city of province Vorarlberg.

You cycle through the protected landscape Rheindelta into Switzerland. Afterwards mostly next to the Lake and along picturesque villages and cities to Constance, which medieval character is developed best in fortress Niederburg.
