Marburg

The picturesque region along the Lahn around Marburg offers fantastic conditions for an active cycling vacation. Its rolling hills, historic towns, and charming villages along the river beckon you to enjoy a leisurely cycling experience. Well-maintained paths meander past castles and palaces, leading you to the idyllic Dammühle and Amöneburg. The vibrant atmosphere of the university town and the culinary specialties of the region complete your vacation experience.

Marburg serves as the focal point of your cycling vacation, with daily returns to the historic half-timbered city after excursions through the Lahn Valley. The first excursion takes you through scenic forests to Dammühle, featuring its cozy beer garden and entertaining mini-golf course. Another historic water wheel, the Brücker Mühle, is also on your itinerary. You'll venture uphill to Amöneburg, where you can enjoy a splendid view over the valley from the town's wall.

During your rest day, take pleasure in your delightful hotel and explore the charming old town, whether by pedalo or at one of the delightful restaurants. The final leg of the journey promises a unique cultural highlight. Cycling along railroad tracks and through picturesque landscapes, you'll arrive at Rauischholzhausen Castle, renowned for its exquisite park.

  • Pedal boating on the Lahn in Marburg: On pleasant days, you can savor a magnificent view of Hesse's eighth-largest city from the water. Spend your days exploring the Landgrave's Palace, and come evening, immerse yourself in the vibrant bar scene surrounding the university. A city tour is also part of the travel package, ensuring you experience the highlights of the city.
  • Historic mills show the path of flour production: The mills near Marburg, such as the Brücker Mühle and the Dammühle, reflect the historical significance of water power in the region. Some have been carefully restored and are open to visitors, while others remain as picturesque ruins. They provide a glimpse into historical mill technology and contribute to the enchanting landscape along the Lahn.
  • The gardens of Rauischholzhausen: The splendid manor house was constructed at the end of the 19th century and stands as a remarkable example of neo-Baroque architecture in Germany. Its grand gardens span approximately 30 hectares and are designed in the style of an English landscape garden.

During this tour, you won't need to worry about packing & repacking, as you return to your base each day. Spend five nights in our exquisite partner hotel in Marburg on the banks of the Lahn. After your exploration tours, relax in the spa and indulge in culinary delights. The three stages are between 25 and 40 kilometers long, and the flat route is easy to navigate, even for beginners. Nevertheless, you can still enjoy wonderful views of the Lahntal valley. This tour is particularly beautiful in the summer months!

Indulge in fine wines amidst idyllic vineyards, cycle along the banks of significant rivers, and admire majestic castles—don't forget to include our cycling vacations in Central Germany in your travel plans!

Itinerary at a glance

Around Marburg, the idyllic beer garden of Dammühle tempts you with regional cuisine, and the 700-year-old Brücker Mühle is worthy highlight. Along an old railway track, you'll cycle to Rauischholzhausen Castle with its impressive park grounds.

Those who would like to get to know Marburg on the arrival day as part of a guided tour (Saturdays, subject to change) should plan their arrival in such a way that you are ready to start your first discoveries by 3pm. An experienced city guide will show you the famous Elisabeth church, the Marburg Landgrave Palace, and of course the historic centre, which is well worth seeing. That way you will receive an optimal overview and certainly some initial insider tips for your holiday week.

Via a variety of cycle-, forest- and farm paths you cycle to the „Dammühle“-mill, one of the most stunning excursion spots in the Marburg hinterland. Be inspired by this historic, lised water mill, which has been family-owned for more than 300 years. Take a seat in the idyllic beer garden or play a small round of minigolf before you start your return journey. Unfortunately, it kicks off with a short ascent (approx. 500 metres in length), but then you peddle easily back to the old university town of Marburg.

Look forward to your first cycling stage and to the more than 700-year-old Brücker Mühle. The historic mill, true to the original, is still running today. Follow the production process from grain to flour with excitement. Afterwards, the café in the idyllic mill courtyard or a place on the green sofa in the old pump room will tempt you. Freshly invigorated, you can master the climb up to the historic excursion town of Amöneburg. You will be rewarded with a unique panoramic view, a wonderful circular wall path and finally a thrilling descent. You then cycle quickly back to Marburg on completely flat cycle paths.

In the morning embark on a fun pedal boat tour on the river Lahn and enjoy Marburg from the water. After these experiences on the water, a walk in the forest beckons ascending to the ‚Spiegelslustturm‘, Marburg’s most fabulous viewing terrace. From the viewing tower enjoy the 360-degree view over the city and countryside and pamper yourself with coffee and cake in the tower café. It is great, that you still have plenty of time left today for a stroll through Marburg’s historic centre or enjoy the facilities of your elegant hotel.

A true highlight awaits you today. Blissfully happy you cycle on a former railway line towards your lovely Day Finish Rauischholzhausen Palace and Gardens. Marvel at the spacious palace grounds. The approximately 30-hectare landscaped English park is home to almost 300 different tree species. It has been under landscape protection since 1956 and was even included in the European themed route of the ‚European Garden Heritage Network’ in 2009. Admire the small palace, spoil yourself in the nice café and let yourself be carried away by bike through the wide palace gardens before you cycle back to Marburg via the beautiful former railway line.
