Panoramic view from the Schmittenhöhe of Zell am See, Lake Zell and the Hohe Tauern Mountains

Panoramic tour based in Hotel Quehenberger

At Tauern-Cycle Path

8 Days / 7 Nights
Medium
Panoramic view from the Schmittenhöhe of Zell am See, Lake Zell and the Hohe Tauern Mountains

The village Maishofen with its castles make ideal starting points for your daytrips. On mostly flat bike paths, you can explore the region around Lake Zell and enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding, partly snow-covered peaks of the over 3,000 metres high Tauern Mountains. You will ride comfortably to unique natural wonders such as the Krimml waterfalls or the Seisenbergklamm gorge and to cultural highlights such as the new national park museum or the tourist mine in Leogang. Many castles are located on or above the road. Relax in the natural pool of the hotel after your cycling days and we also recommend mingling with the locals in order to experience firsthand what it means to live traditions on a daily basis.

Charming Maishofen is now your home for eight days. Enjoy being close to nature and the friendliness of the inhabitants and soak up the view of the Steinerne Meer, among other things. To get you in the mood, the first stage takes you around Lake Zell. Take at least one look at the enchanting Prielau Castle and stroll through the old town in Zell am See. You will see that numerous castles have shaped the history of the region.

On day 4, you can swap your bike for hiking boots. Alternatively, a round of cycle golf, which is included in your trip, is worthwhile. Who will make the "hole-in-one" at one of the 15 stations? Either way - you learn a lot of interesting facts about Maishofen and the surrounding area. The Seisenbergklamm gorge and the Leogang show mine are also on the programme.

  • Magnificent mountain panoramas: The tour is mainly flat at the lake, but the nearby Hohe Tauern mountains have several three-thousand-metre peaks to offer. Direct your gaze to the nearby landscape and imposing mountain worlds.
  • Europe's highest waterfall in Krimml: It is a true spectacle when the masses of water thunder down from a height of around 380 metres. The power of the Krimml Waterfalls is truly gigantic.
  • Beautiful swimming opportunities in the Zeller See and Ritzensee: When the sun is shining and it's starting to get just too hot in your cycling clothes - it's worth taking a dip in the cool water. The lakes along the tour should definitely be used for a swim in good weather.
  • The impressive Seisenbergklamm gorge: The imposing gorge does not go unnoticed for long during a visit. You walk on very well constructed footbridges through the natural monument that was created around 12,000 years ago. The gorge spirit tells its story in a playful way.

An exciting and successful tour that takes cyclists' hearts by storm. Along the rivers, the cycle path is well developed and, above all, well signposted. In the surrounding countryside, one or two ascents await you. Don't forget the included services, e.g. with the "Salzburgerland Card" you can visit numerous attractions for free or at a reduced price.

Itinerary at a glance

From Maishofen, explore the region with its impressive mountain panoramas. Dip your feet into Lake Zell and Lake Ritzen, admire Europe's highest waterfalls in Krimml and hike through the Seisenbergklamm gorge.

Arrival in Maishofen and check into your accommodation. The travel documents and rental bikes (if booked) are available at the hotel.

Today, you will cycle past Castle Prielau to the lakeshore. There, you will continue along the lakeshore to Zell am See with its beautiful old town centre, stroll through the pedestrian zone and visit the historic parish church, before you head on into the Schüttdorf moor. You will return along the other side of the lake with stunning views of the mountain city and the mountain Schmittenhöhe.

You will take the train from Zell am See up into the Oberpinzgau region to the Krimml waterfalls (highest waterfall in Europe). On your way back you will cycle steadily downhill over the national park towns. Through the herbal village Hollerbach, Stuhlfelden with the Castle Liechtenau and Castle Habach and Mittersill with its national park museum. The route can be interrupted and shortened by train at any time.

You can do a hiking tour onto one of Maishofen’s mountains with a view or a short hiking tour onto the ‘Schwalbenwand’ to the alp ”Kammer-Eck-Alm”. Alternatively also possible: a local circular bike tour (approx. 15 km) as part of the unique ‘Radgolf’ (bicycle golf) in Maishofen.

Today you will cycle through the small moor bath Neunbrünnen to the riverbanks of the Saalach River and further to the Leogang Ache. The mine will set you back to times long past. Here, the silver ore for the famous Salzburg silver coins was reduced. The richest mineral deposit in Salzburg holds 70 partly very rare kinds of minerals, which can be admired in the mineral cabinet. After your daytrip, you will return back to your hotel through lush meadows and on beautifully landscaped paths.

The well-developed cycle path leads you gently uphill to the world-famous alpine village of Saalbach and even further to Hinterglemm. You follow the still young Saalach river and marvel at the towering mountains to the right and left. How about a cable car ride (to be organized by your own) to the over 2000-metre-high Mount Schattberg with its breathtaking panorama?

Today you will cycle through a small rural hamlet, first to Maria Alm and then to Saalfelden. From there, you will continue along the river Saalach to Weißbach to the Seisenbergklamm gorge. In 1831, woodcutters constructed a 600 metres long way on which now visitors can explore the gorge. Later, you will cycle back to your hotel past Lake Ritzensee and through the Kolling woods.
