Useful information about cycling holidays in Holland
The Dutch weather
The year-round rather cool climate in the Netherlands is mainly influenced by the North Sea. The not too warm summers and mild winters differ only slightly in terms of temperature. Just as the North Sea tends to make the summers cooler with its cold temperatures, in winter it forms a large heat store, which rarely lets the temperatures drop below zero. The further you head inland, the colder the winters and warmer the summers. The steady wind that blows around your nose almost permanently in Holland can change the climate near the coast in a flash. A good tip from us: it’s better to ride with the wind behind you!
The fragrant cuisine of the colonies
The traditional Dutch cuisine is very hearty and contains ingredients such as fish, meat, butter, cheese and vegetables. The Dutch love stews with potatoes, thick sausages with cabbage. Due to the proximity to the sea, fish is very popular in the country. Herring is particularly popular and is known beyond the Dutch borders. It is very popular in a salad, casserole or as a pan dish. However, Holland is world-famous for one food – cheese. Above all, the two varieties Edam and Gouda are known all over the world. Aside from the traditional cuisine, other influences are also very popular. Due to the many Dutch colonies, such as the Netherlands Antiolles or Dutch India (today Indonesia), diverse influences, exotic spices and fantastic dishes came to Holland! We wish you Eet smakelijk!
Holland or the Netherlands?
The term Holland basically defines only two of the twelve Dutch provinces, namely North and South Holland. The Netherlands is the official and correct expression. However, the term Holland was and is very often used as a synonym. The majority of the Dutch do not feel represented because of this, as Holland only consists of two provinces. It is therefore advisable to actually speak of the Netherlands, in the Netherlands…unless of course, you are in Holland! 😊
