How an idea turns into a cycle tour
Before a Eurobike Original tour becomes available for booking, it goes through an intensive planning and testing process. Every route starts as an idea, is worked out in detail, tested several times and finally checked in person on site. Only when all the elements – the route, logistics, accommodation and safety – truly fit together does it become a finished tour.
In this interview, our colleague Nicolai from Product Management gives us an insight into exactly this process: how we select destinations, what matters when planning routes, and why we cycle each tour ourselves several times before it is included in our programme.
Step 1: Research phase
Question: How does a new tour idea actually come about?
Answer: A tour always starts with an idea – and we have plenty of them. But not every idea automatically becomes a tour that can be booked. The key question is always: Would this really excite our guests? If the answer is YES, the first phase begins: in-depth research into the region.
We take an in-depth look at the region:
Map data is being analysed
Testimonials are read
Apps and digital tools are being tested
Online research helps to complete the picture
Step 2: Planning phase
Question: What happens after the first idea and research?
Answer: Once the first draft of the itinerary is ready, we use this planning phase to work out the details of the entire trip: we sort out all the logistics – from luggage transport to personal support on the ground – and ensure that everything runs smoothly later on.
Step 3: Tour planning
Question: How exactly do you go about planning a tour?
Answer: Tour planning always starts on site: we travel to the destination and test the routes ourselves by bike. We check the paths using GPS, a camera and a laptop, as the reality often differs from what’s shown on the map. This allows us to be flexible and guarantee safe, easily navigable routes for our guests.
We also personally select and test the hotels. In doing so, we look for a feel-good factor, good facilities and secure storage for hire bikes.
Step 4: Quality down to the smallest detail
Question: What happens after returning from the region?
Answer: Back at our office in Obertrum am See, all the information is collated and discussed as a team. This process results in the final route descriptions, photographic material and content for our website and the Eurobike & Eurohike on Tour app.
We also place great importance on training our team in customer service. Many of our travel specialists know the regions personally and can therefore advise our guests based on real-life experience.
Question: Is a trip then complete?
Answer: No. Because our high standards of quality are so important to us, our work does not end with the initial planning of the trip. We are constantly out and about on our cycling tours. This allows us to re-evaluate routes, accommodation and additional services directly on site and continuously refine our trips. In this way, we ensure that our guests can enjoy their active holiday in a relaxed, hassle-free and well-organised manner.
