This challenging loop tour through Austria's lake region connects ten stunning lakes including Attersee, Traunsee, Wolfgangsee, and Mondsee. The route covers approximately 50-70 km daily through mostly hilly terrain along lakeshores and the Salzach River. Highlights include Salzburg's historic old town, the imperial city of Bad Ischl, picturesque St. Wolfgang, and a boat ride on Lake Attersee. The tour features visits to Oberndorf (birthplace of 'Silent Night'), Gmunden's Castle Orth, and Schloss Hellbrunn.

What is lovelier than being out and about, cycling along the banks of lakes, and just letting your spirit soar in a marvellous natural landscape? The cycle tour through the Salzkammergut and the Trumer lakes area is wonderfully suited for this. Only a few kilometres beyond Salzburg, you will be greeted by the luxury of a unique natural panorama. The gentle, hilly landscape of Salzburg’s alpine foothills has a charm all of its own. You will cycle through meadows and moorlands to Oberndorf – the place associated with the Christmas carol "Silent Night" - and also to the old imperial town of Bad Ischl. In a way, you will be travelling through a whole world of clichés transformed into realities. The ten lakes round tour is active recreation, experiencing nature and enjoying many attractions, such as the Schafberg mountain and the Orth castle.

At the starting point of the 7-day Ten Lakes Tour you can choose between Salzburg and the Trumer Lakes (in the latter, the stage destinations shift accordingly). The festival city is known as the ‘Rome of the north’ and rightly so: the magnificent houses of worship, splendid architecture and cultural diversity make Salzburg a world-renowned city.

It seems like Christmas is on the way in the Trumer Lake district! But don’t worry, it’s not because of the weather but because of the music! One of the most famous Christmas carols was sung here for the first time in 1818 in the St. Nikola Church in Oberndorf. ‘Silent night, holy night’. The other stage destinations including the Attersee, Traunsee and Wolfgangsee are all about the cool water and beauty of the landscape on the way there

  • The Getreidegasse in Salzburg is the heart of the city. Here you can stroll through national and international shops and enjoy traditional cuisine in the inns. There is of course pure culture around the birthplace of the musical prodigy Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
  • The turquoise green Attersee: Admittedly, we cannot deliver the Caribbean to you on this this tour. But the Attersee comes pretty close in some parts. At Nussdorf, for example, you can explore an underwater world of the lake with plexiglass kayaks.
  • The World Heritage Site of Hallstatt has been copied by Chinese architects, but of course it doesn’t stand up to the original. The unique location on the lake of the same name makes the village a very special destination, the picturesque panoramas do the rest.
  • The panorama from Schafberg am Wolfgangsee: Those who take the path to the Schafberg (whether on foot or the famous railway) and are lucky enough to have a clear sky can enjoy a special 360-degree panorama. Review your tour from a lofty height with a view of the lakes of the Salzkammergut and Alpine foothills.

Flat and hilly sections alternate on the stages. Along the lakes, the route leads on cycle paths and side roads with a little traffic. There are plenty of opportunities to stop here to enjoy the beautiful views.

Itinerary at a glance

The lake region around Salzburg has a lot to offer! A boat trip on Lake Attersee is a special experience and the panorama from Schafberg on Lake Wolfgang leaves you speechless. Between lake and mountain lies the picturesque St. Wolfgang.

Information on the tour and bike fitting. In the case of those arriving at the Trumer Seen lakes, the subsequent daily tours are moved accordingly in the itinerary (these guests begin the tour with the route described for the third day, cycling the Salzburg - Trumer Lakes route on the final day).

Today, you will cycle along the Salzach to Oberndorf the birthplace of the Christmas carol "Silent Night", Arnsdorf with the “Silent Night” Museum, Michaelbeuern (visit the abbey before), and further on into the Trumer lakes country (Lake Obertrum, Lake Mattsee, Lake Grabensee) and partly also to Lake Wallersee. A shorter, direct version is also possible!

On the third day, the tour will take you through the nature reserve of the Egelseen lakes to Schleedorf. Later, you will continue to the idyllic Lake Irrsee. Overnight stay in Mondsee with the opportunity to visit the castle and the smokehouse.

First you cycle along the Mondsee shore to the Attersee Then either a boat trip to Attersee (only for arrivals in July and August) or by bike along the Attersee. Afterwards, you will cycle through the Aurachtal valley to Lake Traunsee with Gmunden with the famous castle Orth and the ceramics factory. Aftwerwards to Altmünster with its bicycle museum, and Traunkirchen with the "Fishermen’s Pulpit").

Along the Traun River to the ‘imperial city’ of Bad Ischl with the Imperial Park, the Imperial Villa, Sissi's Tea House and Café Zauner, and along the Ischler Ache to Lake Wolfgang.

Today you will follow the cycle route to St. Gilgen and on to the deep blue Fuschlsee. From there past the Lake Hintersee and the Strubklamm gorge into the Wiestal valley (dam); You will come through the Glasenbachklamm into the Salzachtal valley. Shortly before reaching Salzburg, it is worth visiting the castle Schloss Hellbrunn (park, zoo, water games). Your destination is the festival and Mozart city of Salzburg with its numerous attractions (fortress, old town).

On the banks of the lakes and at the river Salzach, the routes are completely flat. In between, the terrain is mainly hilly. Depending on the option chosen, approximately one third of the route is on cycle paths and almost all the rest is through fields and on forest paths, farm roads, and quiet side roads. There are only a few short sections on roads with more traffic

Finally, the moment has arrived – my first Eurobike “Team Member on Tour” travel is about to begin! I’ve been looking forward to this moment for a long time. From the very start, I knew exactly what I wanted: a tour through the stunning Salzkammergut region. As a Travel Specialist, I’m responsible for this area, so I naturally chose the Ten Lakes Loop Tour. I’ve always been fascinated by the sparkling lakes of the Salzkammergut. Of course, I already know the area quite well since it’s not far from my hometown. All the more excited am I to experience this dreamy region from a new perspective – from the saddle of a bike. Over the next few days, that’s exactly what I’ll be doing together with my parents and my boyfriend. Join me on this self-guided cycling adventure!

Since I did not grow up in this area - unlike most of my collegues - but only moved to the outskirts of Salzburg one and a half years ago, I decided to get to know our ‚house-tour‘ a little bit better. Although my girlfriend and me have always explored this amazing holiday region not only by bike but also on foot as part of hiking tours, I was very excited to discover together with her a few new facets of this diverse and multifarious region by bike.
