The scenic cycle path along the Danube is a timeless classic, drawing thousands of cyclists from around the world each year. As one of Europe’s oldest long-distance cycling routes, it remains among the continent’s most popular river paths. Covering roughly 2,850 kilometers (about 1,770 miles), it follows the Danube from its source in Donaueschingen all the way to its mouth at the Black Sea—mostly flat and ideally suited for cycling.

On Our Classic Route from Passau to Vienna, you’ll cycle over 330 kilometers (about 205 miles) through some of the most beautiful and vibrant stretches along the Danube. At times, the river guides you through gentle wine country, at others through historic Austrian cities such as Linz and Krems. Along the way, numerous castles, palaces, and charming wine regions invite you to pause and enjoy. Thanks to the mostly flat route, this stage is especially well suited for families, leisure cyclists, and entry-level cyclists.

The most scenic Stages of the Danube Cycle Path

Follow the Inn River to Passau along a mostly flat, excellent-quality cycle path of about 40–50 kilometers (25–31 miles), perfect for relaxed cycling. Continuing along the Danube, you’ll pass Obernzell and Engelhartszell before entering the Donauleiten Nature Reserve, which leads to the Schlögener Schlinge (Schlögen Loop), where the river makes a dramatic 180-degree bend. On the short ferry ride to the hotel, you can take your time enjoying this impressive natural phenomenon.

Today’s route of about 55 kilometers (34 miles) winds through the green Eferding Basin, passing Aschach, Ottensheim, and Wilhering, before reaching Linz, the capital of Upper Austria. The superbly developed paths make for easy cycling, and the historic Old Town offers plenty of cafés and restaurants for a break. Highlights in Linz include the panoramic views from the Pöstlingberg and a leisurely stroll along the Danube promenade.

Today’s route of about 55 kilometers (34 miles) takes you slightly off the Danube to St. Florian, home to its Augustinian Abbey, and continues on to Enns. Afterwards, you return to the Danube and cycle into the charming Baroque town of Grein, where the theater, the Shipping Museum, and Greinburg Castle all invite a visit.

The stretch of the Danube once feared by boatmen, the Strudengau, now welcomes cyclists. Where crews once battled the river’s currents, you can now enjoy a relaxed ride along the cycle path. In Maria Taferl, a magnificent pilgrimage church towers above the Danube, drawing thousands of visitors each year.

On today’s stage, you’ll cycle up to 75 kilometers (about 47 miles) from Melk through the enchanting Wachau region, known for its orchards and vineyards. Passing Spitz, Weißenkirchen, and the Dürnstein Castle ruins, you’ll reach Krems or Tulln. A highlight of this stage is the organized wine tasting in the Wachau.

The final 45 to 75 kilometers (28–47 miles) bring you leisurely into Vienna, partly on cycle paths and partly with a short train ride. Once you arrive, explore the city at your own pace—from a stroll along Mariahilfer Straße, to a visit to St. Stephen’s Cathedral, or a ride in one of the traditional horse-drawn Fiakers.
