Mozart, Castles and Viennese Waltz
Cycle from Salzburg to Vienna along the Danube Cycle Path through Austria's river valleys. This easy, mostly flat route follows the Salzach, Inn, and Danube rivers on quiet, asphalted paths. Highlights include the Silent Night Chapel in Oberndorf, Burghausen's medieval castle, baroque Schärding, the three-river city of Passau, the Schlögener Schlinge river bend, Linz, Melk Abbey, and the Wachau wine region. Daily distances average 55-80 km with one train transfer from Krems to Vienna.
Enchanting like Mozart’s arias and elating like the sound of the Viennese Waltz, this bike tour combines the best aspects from the most famous cultural cities in Austria: starting at Mozart’s birthplace in Salzburg all the way to Vienna, the city of the Viennese Waltz. Daily stunning countryside and countless cultural highlights are in store: Oberndorf, home of the ”Silent Night” chapel, the impressive castle site in Burghausen, the Baroque town of Schärding. The river Danube snakes elegantly through the Schlögener Schlinge (river bend), through the Weinviertel (Austria’s wine region) culinary treats await. The last leg of the tour leads through the Wachau area and from Krems onwards to Vienna by train, nearly feels like a waltz itself.
Quiet asphalted bicycle paths and small rural roads along the riverbeds of the Salzach, Inn and Danube. There are only a few short sections on non-asphalted cycle paths. The best example of a perfect cycle path runs downstream along the river Danube and it is called the’Donauradweg’.
