Source of the Inn
The Inn, whose name is derived from the Celtic word for water, originates in the Swiss Alps, to be more precise in the Upper Engadine, at 2564 metres above sea level. From there the tributary of the Danube runs through Austria and Southern Germany, where it finally flows into the Danube at Passau.
The total length of the Inn is 517km, of which a good two thirds of the river flows through the Alps. The Austrian part of the Inn is 193 km long.
Mostly near the river, you cycle along the Inn on mostly paved routes, but also on low-traffic side roads an unpaved paths.
The first part of the Inn Cycle Path, which is located in Switzerland starts at approx. 1800 metres above sea level. From there it goes steadily downhill along the Inn with some, sometimes very steep, climbs. As compensation, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the Alps. From Switzerland to the Tyrolean Landeck, the Inn Cycle Path loses approx. 1000 metres in height with a length of approx. 150km. In the second half from Landeck to Passau, however, it loses only 300 metres in height with a route length of 360km.
The Inn Cycle Path is 520 kilometres long in total. Thanks to this total length, the Inn Cycle Path is one of the longest cycle paths in Europe.
The months between April and September are highly recommended for a tour along the Inn Cycle Path.

Because of the many baroque buildings and historical squares, the small town of Schärding is known as the baroque town on the Inn. The ‘Silberzeile’- a row of buildings from the late baroque period – is located on the town square and is particularly popular. But Schärding also has a lot more to offer. Immerse yourself in a different time and enjoy the historical atmosphere.
Passau, also known as the ‘three-river-city’ is located in Lower Bavaria and has a population of around 50,000. Passau is situated directly on the border with Austria and is home to the confluence of the three rivers Danube, Inn and Ilz. The beautiful old town, the venerable fortress Veste Oberhaus from the 13th Century and the St. Stephen’s Cathedral are just a few of the reasons why Passau is such a popular city for Eurobike guests.
