Brief information about the Tauern cycle path
I love to be in the mountains…what is more beautiful than letting your eyes wander over the majestic mountains, breathing in the fresh mountain air and being happy with yourself and the whole world? One of the most popular cycle paths through the Austrian mountains starts at the foot of Europe’s largest waterfall – the Krimml. From here you cycle over perfectly developed and almost continuous cycle paths through the beautiful Pinzgau to the state capital of Salzburg and from there to Passau in Bavaria. Your constant companions will be the mighty mountains of the Austrian and Bavarian Alps.

The Tauern cycle path
There are two different versions of the Tauern Cycle Path: one runs along the Salzach and the Inn from the regions of Salzburg and Upper Austria. The second variant leads cyclists further into Berchtesgadener Land. The cycle path through the Hohe Tauern begins in Oberpinzgau and then continues through Pongau and Tennengau to the capital of the state of Salzburg. Here the two variants separate and lead either towards Passau or through the Saalach valley back to the Pinzgau.
The tour starts at the Krimml waterfalls, which are located about 1100 metres above sea level, and ends in Passau which is only 300 metres above sea level. The cycle tours on the Tauern Cycle Path can be classified as more leisurely – expect less strenuous climbs and look forward to many flat and slightly downhill routes.
The small village of Krimml in the Oberpinzgau has just under 900 inhabitants but has been made famous due to a certain waterfall! After all, the Krimml waterfalls are the largest in Europe! Krimml is one of the municipalities of the Hohe Tauern National Park and will surely amaze you with the charming community and surrounding mountains.
The popular winter ski resort of Mittersill is on the edge of the Tauern Cycle Path. The modern but traditional small town is located in the middle of the Hohe Tauern National Park. But it’s not only us cyclists and skiers that that think Mittersill is a worthwhile holiday destination, cross-country skiers and hikers also appreciate the incredibly beautiful mountains around Mittersill. And for anyone interested in the Hohe Tauern National Park, we recommend visiting the National Park World Museum in Mittersill.
Zell am See/ Kaprun
The two neighbouring towns of Zell am See and Kaprun come together to form the popular holiday region of Zell am See – Kaprun. With the beautiful mountains, the picturesque lake and the two pretty towns, the region combines everything a holiday-maker could wish for in summer and winter.
The undisputed cultural highlight on the Tauern Cycle Path is the Mozart city of Salzburg. With its many sights, small streets and delightful old town houses, the city on the Salzach is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Austria. And the quality of life is also very high here. The city is extremely clean, well-kept and characterised by green oases. A beautiful city that you should visit at least once in your life.
And the charming Bavarian town of Passau will also capture hearts, we are certain of that. Visit the proud fortress Veste Oberhaus, stroll through the baroque old town, enjoy a real Bavarian beer and feel a bit proud of yourself that you reached your destination by bike.
Did you know,...
- …that the Hohe Tauern National Park is the oldest in Austria?
- …that Austria’s highest mountains are in the Hohe Tauern?
- …that the Krimml waterfalls drop a full 380 metres?
- …that in no other Austrian city is so much traditional dress worn than in Salzburg?
