Route Overview
The Tauern Cycle Path is one of the Alps’ most popular bike routes. It begins spectacularly at the Krimml Waterfalls, Europe’s largest, and descends steadily from around 1,100 meters (3,610 feet) above sea level to Passau at 300 meters (980 feet). Mostly flat or gently sloping, the route allows for comfortable cycling through the picturesque Pinzgau region, continuing through Pongau and Tennengau, all the way to the Mozart city of Salzburg.
At Salzburg, the route splits: one option follows the Salzach and Inn rivers through Upper Austria to Passau, while the other ventures into the Berchtesgaden region before returning through the Saalach Valley to the Pinzgau. Towering peaks of the Austrian and Bavarian Alps accompany you throughout the journey. Smooth and well-signposted, the cycle path not only showcases stunning natural landscapes but also offers numerous cultural and scenic highlights. A tour along the Tauern Cycle Path blends relaxation, active exploration, and Alpine panoramas for an unforgettable experience.
