Challenging 5-day cycling loop through Austria's lake district, covering approximately 50-70 km daily. Route passes ten lakes including Mondsee, Attersee, and Wolfgangsee, cycling along the Salzach River and through hilly terrain. Highlights include Salzburg's historic old town, Bad Ischl imperial city, St. Wolfgang with its cogwheel railway to Schafberg, and Hellbrunn Palace. Mostly flat lakeside paths with hilly sections between lakes, using cycle paths and quiet country roads.
Do you have questions about this tour?
What is lovelier than being out and about, cycling along the banks of lakes, and just letting your spirit soar in a marvellous natural landscape? The cycle tour through the Salzkammergut is wonderfully suited for this. Only a few kilometres beyond Salzburg, you will be greeted by the luxury of a unique natural panorama. The gentle, hilly landscape of Salzburg’s alpine foothills has a charm all of its own. You will cycle along Lake Mondsee and through the Weißenbachtal-valley into the old imperial town of Bad Ischl. In a way, you will be travelling through a whole world of clichés transformed into realities. The ten lakes round tour is active recreation, experiencing nature and enjoying many attractions, such as the Schafberg mountain and Salzburg.
It starts in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Salzburg, where you can, for example, dare to climb from the cathedral to the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Enjoy a plate of the famous Salzburger Nockerl before heading off to Mondsee on day to and the Wolfgangsee on day 3.
The final stage is peppered with highlights. First you cycle along the south bank of the Attersee. Walk in the footsteps of Empress Sissi in the imperial town of Bad Ischl. Tip: For those with a sweet tooth, a visit to Hofzuckerbäckerei Zauner for a mélange and pastries is recommended. Finally, you need some strength for the last stage destinationa long the Wolfgangsee.
Getreidegasse in Salzburg: Let yourself be captivated by the magic of Salzburg’s old town. Visit the lively Getreidegasse with its numerous chic boutiques and, of course, the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Take a very good look at the magnificent architecture of the houses.
The turquoise green Attersee: Did you know? The largest lake located entirely in Austria, reaches 169 metres down to the bottom at its deepest point. That makes it a paradise for divers. Due to the beautiful location it casts its spell over those looking for relaxation – will you be one of them?
The World Heritage Site of Hallstatt is definitely worth a visit. Due to the idyllic location on the lake of the same name and the special architecture, Hallstatt has become world famous. The small village has a long to offer – from the oldest salt mine in the world to the ossuary.
The panorama from the Schafberg over the Wolfgangsee: Whether on foot or with the steepest cogwheel railway in Austria – the view from the 1,783-metre-high Schafberg is worth the trip. Once at the top, the ‘Himmelspforte’ invites you to rest.
Flat cycle paths along the lakes and rivers alternate here with hilly routes that require a bit of stamina. The stages are between 40 and 50 kilometres per day, which are mainly to be completed on quiet side streets and cycle paths.
Stroll through the Getreidegasse in Salzburg and treat yourself to a portion of Kaiserschmarrn (pancakes with apple sauce). The majestic atmosphere in Bad Ischl and a ride on the cogwheel train up the Schafberg complement the beauty of the lakes.
Today, you will cycle along the Salzach, then on the old Ischler rail trail until Eugendorf and further on to Thalgau. You cycle pass the Drachenwand which is a massive rock edge next to Lake Mondsee. Overnight stay in Mondsee (castle, smokehouse).
You cycle along the south bank of Lake Attersee through the romantic Weißenbachtal Valley into the Trauntal Valley and the Emporer’s city of Bad Ischl. Along the Ischler Ache river, there is a leisurely and short route to Lake Wolfgangsee. St. Wolfgang impresses with the Weißes Rössl, the parish church and the cog railroad up the Schafberg, Strobl, Abersee and the Zinkenbach gorge.
You will follow the cycle route to St. Gilgen ("Mozart Village"), and on to the deep blue Fuschlsee- From therepast the Hintersee lake, and the Strubklamm gorge into the Wiestal valley (dam); You will come through the Glasenbachklamm into the Salzachtal valley. Shortly before reaching Salzburg, it is worth visiting the castle Schloss Hellbrunn (park, zoo, water games). Your destination is the festival and Mozart city of Salzburg with its numerous attractions (fortress, old town).
On the banks of the lakes and at the river Salzach, the routes are completely flat. In between, the terrain is mainly hilly. Depending on the option chosen, approximately one third of the route is on cycle paths and almost all the rest is through fields and on forest paths, farm roads, and quiet side roads. There are only a few short sections on roads with more traffic.
