Travel story: Ten Lakes Loop Tour

Rediscovering My Homeland by Bicycle
Cyclist looks at Ort Castle on Lake Traunsee

Finally, the moment has arrived – my first Eurobike “Team Member on Tour” travel is about to begin! I’ve been looking forward to this moment for a long time. From the very start, I knew exactly what I wanted: a tour through the stunning Salzkammergut region. As a Travel Specialist, I’m responsible for this area, so I naturally chose the Ten Lakes Loop Tour. I’ve always been fascinated by the sparkling lakes of the Salzkammergut. Of course, I already know the area quite well since it’s not far from my hometown. All the more excited am I to experience this dreamy region from a new perspective – from the saddle of a bike. Over the next few days, that’s exactly what I’ll be doing together with my parents and my boyfriend. Join me on this self-guided cycling adventure!

TIME TO GO!

Our journey begins at the company headquarters in Obertrum am See. Early in the morning, we head to the Eurobike office, drop off our luggage, and pick up the rental bikes that are already waiting for us. A colleague takes care of our bags, and just like that, we’re ready to roll.

The weather may not be at its best, but that doesn’t stop us. Full of anticipation, we set out toward Mondsee. The perfectly planned route takes us along peaceful bike paths and meadow trails through the idyllic Egelseen nature reserve. Just before Mondsee, the route traces the shores of the Irrsee, offering wonderful glimpses of the shimmering water along the way.

A Feast of Culture and a Journey Through Time

The Ten Lakes Tour offers not only breathtaking landscapes but also a wealth of cultural treasures. After arriving in Mondsee, we wander through the charming town and visit the impressive Basilica of St. Michael.

In Gmunden, we visit the picture-perfect Schloss Ort, beautifully set on the lake and reached via a romantic wooden bridge. Known in Austria from the TV series Schlosshotel Orth, the castle is a captivating sight right on the water’s edge.

Another jewel along the route is the world-famous village of Hallstatt. This time, however, we choose to follow the scenic East Bank Cycle Path, admiring Hallstatt’s beauty from across the lake. The ride is nothing short of spectacular - and one I can wholeheartedly recommend.

From Bad Goisern, we continue toward the sparkling waters of the Wolfgangsee, pausing in Bad Ischl along the way. In the peaceful Kaiserpark, we walk in the footsteps of Empress Sisi and Emperor Franz Joseph, surrounded by history and lush greenery. The Kaiservilla, once the imperial couple’s summer residence, is an absolute must-see.

On the second-to-last day, we arrive in Salzburg, Mozart’s beloved city. From the Hohensalzburg Fortress to Salzburg Cathedral to Mozart’s birthplace, the city overflows with cultural riches. On the way back to Obertrum, we stop in Oberndorf, the birthplace of the timeless Christmas carol Silent Night. For culture lovers, this tour truly delivers.

Savor the Flavors – Great Food Fuels Great Rides

The journey is just as rewarding when it comes to culinary delights. In Mondsee, despite the weather, we can’t resist stopping by the delicious Übleis ice cream parlor—a real treat. Since we’re traveling during asparagus season, we enjoy a flavorful asparagus soup, a staple on many menus. On cooler, rainy days, it’s a welcome and comforting pick-me-up.

On the second day, we stop for lunch at the stylish Boho restaurant Das Attersee, enjoying both the fantastic view and excellent cuisine. Of course, traditional Austrian specialties like Kaspressknödel and Kasnocken are not to be missed. A particular highlight is the Uferwirt Seeraunzn, situated right on the shores of Hallstätter See. On a sunny day, we savor our lunch on the terrace, soaking in the spectacular view of Hallstatt.

In Bad Ischl, we make sure to visit the historic Café Zauner. There, we sample the famous Zauner Stollen and treat ourselves to a small selection of cakes before hopping back on our bikes.

Along Austria’s Stunning Lakes

On this tour, you’ll discover some of Austria’s most impressive lakes. Much of the route runs right along their shores - making for a truly immersive nature experience.

I’ve especially fallen for the Attersee, the largest lake entirely within Austria. Those traveling in July or August have the option to take a boat tour on the Attersee. Since we’re exploring in May, we cycle instead - which is just as rewarding: From a small hill, we enjoy a stunning view - a perfect spot for a break in the heart of nature.

The Traunsee, Austria’s deepest lake, also captivates us, especially framed by the towering Northern Limestone Alps. On sunny mornings, we take a quick dip in the cold water - a wonderfully refreshing experience!

Beyond the Hallstätter See, Wolfgangsee, and the Trumer Lakes, the route passes many other sparkling bodies of water. Anyone who enjoys a refreshing swim along the way will find no shortage of opportunities.

Reflections

Despite the mixed weather, this tour was entirely rewarding. Exploring the well-known lakes and towns of our homeland by bike was truly something special. The route is perfectly planned, offering a rich mix of scenic landscapes and cultural highlights.

Anyone eager to experience the Salzkammergut with all its lakes and charming towns will find this tour ideal. For us, it was a fantastic opportunity to see our own region through the eyes of a cyclist.

My favorite spot

This Eurobike Original Tour offers countless beautiful places— whether it’s the lively town of Gmunden, the serene charm of Bad Goisern, or the historic Kaiserpark in Bad Ischl.

My personal favorite, however, was on the Wolfgangsee. On the second-to-last day, we took a small detour and discovered a cozy bench right on the shore—ideal for a moment of relaxation. We sat, listening to the gentle lapping of the waves, and let our thoughts drift. With the wind in our hair, the water almost sounded like the sea, and closing our eyes, we felt as if we were on the coast. A perfect spot for a peaceful pause in the heart of nature.
