IJsselmeer Loop Tour
- 8 Days / 7 Nights
- Self-guided tour
Arrival in Huizen
Your first hotel is located in the harbour area of Huizen and a good starting point for visiting the fishing village.
The first cycling day you drive along the southern shore of the IJsselmeer and thus you reach Muiden where you will find the Medieval Muiderslot. Then you arrive in Amsterdam. In this magnificent capital of the Netherlands you'll stay one night (see 8-day cycling tour). Behind the Central Station you will cross the IJ by ferry. Comfortable cycling along the former estuary you will reach Waterland with its bird-rich peat meadows, ancient canals and watercourses. In the island village Marken, the houses were built of wood and it seems that time has stood still. By boat or by Monnickendam you arrive in Volendam. You will stay on the harbor quay or at the mill of Katwoude.
The next day you drive over the old Zuiderzee dike by the cheese town of Edam and the picturesque town Hoorn. Here you can see the imposing buildings from the golden age. In Enkhuizen, where you will spend the night, you should plan a city tour and we recommend to visit the Zuiderzee Museum.
The next day you go by ferry across the IJsselmeer to the Frisian town Stavoren. From this city, you can make wonderful excursions to the scenic Hindeloopen. Through the wooded, hilly countryside of Gaasterland you cycle further to Workum. Your hotel can be found either on the Brink or a little further in the port town of Lemmer.
After a well-deserved night you go along the steam-pumping station of Lemmer and then across the Weeribben. This National Park is a unique peat with an exceptional wealth of flora and fauna. Your hotel is in Giethoorn, the "Venice of the North" with its myriad of arched bridges, boats, and thatched farmhouses.
From here you can navigate your bike to the Hanseatic city of Kampen, which is located at the IJssel river. Via the attractive fortress city of Elburg and passing near small lakes you reach your goal Nunspeet stage, at the edge of the largest forest in the Netherlands: the Veluwe.
On the last day you cycle through the old port city of Harderwijk and the fishing village Spakenburg. On the wooded banks of the Gooi you will return to Huizen.
You cycle on flat and asphalted official bike paths or side roads, ideal for families and first-time cyclists
