Frederiksborg Castle is a moated castle in Hillerød

The essentials at a glance

Cycle tour from Copenhagen through North Zealand along the Øresund strait to Helsingør with Kronborg Palace. Route leads through coastal resorts Hornbæk and Gilleleje, past Frederiksborg Palace in Hillerød, across the Isefjord by ferry to Højby, and via Holbæk to Roskilde with its UNESCO World Heritage cathedral. Medium difficulty on flat to slightly hilly terrain, mostly on cycle paths. Daily distances 40-70 km.

This stunning holiday starts and ends in the cycling capital of Europe. Whether the Royal Palace, the Little Mermaid or what is probably the longest pedestrian zone in the world, there is a lot to discover in Copenhagen. No less interesting is the coastal area to the North of the capital. Palaces and castles alternate with natural sandy beaches and thus enchant cyclists. Discover an amazing part of Denmark on this cycle holiday.

This loop tour begins and ends in Copenhagen – the Danish capital offers the perfect cycling backdrop and plenty of sights to discover. The first stage leads you north, cycling along the Øresund Strait and enjoying the coastal towns of Bellevue and Helsingør on the Baltic Sea. After more kilometres along the coast, the route heads inland; passing lakes and through forests, you reach Hillerød.

On day 4, the route takes you back to the sea as you cycle to Højby, leaving enough time for a detour to the Isefjord. The following day, you can look forward to beautiful sandy beaches on the Odsherred peninsula; passing fjords, you reach the historic port town of Holbæk. The Isefjord accompanies you again on day 6 as you make your way to Roskilde, where the cathedral – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – awaits you. The final stage leads you back to Copenhagen, where you can reflect on your holiday and revisit your favourite spots in the city.

  • Between “hygge” and urban buzz in Copenhagen: Both cosy and vibrant, the Danish capital has much to offer – whether strolling through Nyhavn or visiting Tivoli, one of the world’s oldest amusement parks. Must-sees include the palace of the Danish Royal Family and, of course, the Little Mermaid – don’t forget to take a photo with her.
  • Idyllic nature at the Isefjord: The Isefjord is one of the largest fjords in Denmark, stretching around 35 kilometres from north to south. Several parts of the Isefjord are designated nature reserves to protect the diverse flora and fauna, including numerous bird species, fish, and marine mammals. Beautiful beaches and traditional fishing villages complete the experience.
  • Royal flair and historic atmosphere at Frederiksborg Castle: The castle was built in the early 17th century by King Christian IV and served as a royal residence for many years. Today, it houses the Museum of National History, founded in 1878. The castle church and beautifully landscaped gardens are also well worth a visit.

Copenhagen has one of the best-developed cycling networks in Europe, making the city ideal to explore on two wheels. On the final kilometers from Albertslund to Copenhagen, you even ride along a super cycle highway. In North Zealand, the route is gently hilly. Make use of the included ferry ride from Hundested to Rørvig for a pleasant little excursion.

Itinerary at a glance

Having fun at Tivoli or taking a stroll in the old town? Why not both! From Copenhagen, you can cycle along the Øresund strait to Helsingør. You'll catch a glimpse of the Isefjord from the charming town of Højby, and the cathedral in Roskilde is particularly worth a visit.

The Danish capital has a lot to offer. Stroll through the historic city centre or visit the well-known amusement park Tivoli.

You leave Copenhagen heading North. Today’s stage takes you along the Öresund, the strait between Zealand in Denmark and Scania in Sweden. Always with a view of the Baltic Sea, you can quickly reach the well-known lido Bellevue. A dip in the cool water provides refreshment. In Helsingør we recommend a visit to Kronborg Palace. Alternatively you can take the ferry for a short trip to Helsingborg located on the Swedish side.

Take some time to visit the old port town of Helsingør before you continue on your cycle tour. The coastal resorts of Hornbæk and Gilleleje will enchant you and invite you to linger. Now the route continues leading you inland and away from the coast. You pass extensive nature reserves and small lakes. Impressed by the numerous contrasts, you have reached your Day Finish Hillerød. Visit Frederiksborg Palace or simply treat yourself to a good glass of wine at the hotel – both are a great ending to the day.

You cycle back to the coast. The small, idyllic villages of Tisvildeleje and Liseleje as well as numerous beaches exude their charm. You have reached today’s Day Finish Højby. The picturesque small town is situated on the opposite side of the Isefjord. The ferry ticket to Rørvig is included.

On the Odsherred peninsula, the sea, the dunes and the beautiful salty sea air are practically never far away, You find the most stunning sandy beaches there. But your cycling stage today has a lot to offer too: Breathtaking impressions await you along the coast of the Isefjord, Lammefjord and Holbækfjord. The port town of Holbæk was first mentioned in 1199. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St.Nicholas is worth a visit.

Today you start South along the Isefjord. Green meadows and enchanting villages await you. The final part leads you along the bay of Roskilde. Roskilde Cathedral welcomes you already from afar. Since the beginning of the 15th century, the cathedral has been the preferred burial church of the Danish royal family and since 1995 it has also been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A visit to the Viking Ship Museum is also worthwhile.

The final stage takes you directly back to the starting point of your cycle holiday, the Danish capital Copenhagen. From Albertslund you have access to the C99 Super Cycle Route, which takes you to the centre with almost no traffic. In the afternoon there is still enough time to explore the city on your own. During a stroll you can review all the wonderful impressions of your cycling tour through North Zealand.
