The Port of Flensburg

Danish Baltic Sea

Cycle tour around Little Belt

8 Days / 7 Nights
Medium
The Port of Flensburg

The strait between the Jutland peninsula and the island of Funen, known as the Little Belt, is a protected area that has turned out to be a true dream destination for our cycle tours. Because the perfect cycle paths, the beautiful Baltic Sea and the picturesque islands almost seem to have sprung straight out of a picture book. Enjoy the sight of fjord-like landscapes, beautiful beaches and steep cliffs. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot a porpoise. Isn’t that a wonderful prospect?

The mostly flat, sometimes slightly hilly route around the Little Belt is a real pleasure for both beginners and experienced cyclists. The faster cyclists simply have more time to enjoy the wonderful landscape and small towns.

  • Whale watching on the island of Funen: The island of Funen is known for its harbour porpoises. The friendly mammals are closely related to dolphins and put a smile on everyone’s face as they enjoy watching their goings-on.
  • Gråsten Castle: The summer residence of the royal family is an impressive sight. Unfortunately, the chapel and the park of the castle can be only be visited if the royal family is absent.

The daily stages between 40 and 70km lead you, partly along the coast, partly inland around the Little Belt in the Danish Baltic Sea. Look forward to relaxed days of cycling in a Nordic atmosphere!

Itinerary at a glance

Denmark offers picturesque bike routes and refreshing swims in the Baltic Sea. With a bit of luck, you might spot porpoises on the island of Funen. Equally impressive and majestic is Gråsten Castle, the royal summer residence.

Your cycling holiday in Denmark begins in Sønderborg on the Flensburg Fjord, not far from Germany. Visit the castle of the same name, one of the oldest royal castles in Jutland, built directly on the water.

Today‘s route is relaxed and takes you through forests and wide fields over the Sundewitt peninsula. A visit to Sandbjerg Castle, one of the most elegant palaces in Southern Jutland, is worthwhile. Åbenrå captivates with its charming town houses and craftsmen‘s houses.

Today's first destination is Haderslev. The medieval old town on the Hadersleven dam entices you with cosy cafés and a walk along the reservoir, which dates back to the Middle Ages. Back on your bike you cycle leisurely to Christiansfeld through the peaceful countryside.

You cycle across fields and forests to Kolding. There you are already greeted from afar by Koldinghus Castle, which towers high above the town. Past Kolding Fjord and across Skærbæk you cross the Little Belt, just before you reach Middelfart, your destination for today.

Visit the Henner Friisers Hus in Middelfart. It is considered one of the most beautiful half-timbered houses in Denmark. You cycle along the coast to Strib, known for its small lighthouse. Take a break at the beach: with a bit of luck, you might spot porpoises. The journey continues through picturesque landscapes until you reach Odense, the third-largest city in the country.

The route leads you along the Odense Å river, taking you through the suburbs of Odense. It is advisable to take a break in Brobyværk, where you can enjoy a good meal at Brobyværk Kro. After a relatively flat stretch, you will soon encounter the so-called 'Fynian Alps.' Here, the path winds through a beautiful nature reserve, characterized by rolling hills in the glacial moraine landscape as you make your way to Fåborg.

With its narrow, cobbled streets, Fåborg is one of the oldest and most idyllic small towns in Denmark. In Bøjden you board the ferry to the island of Als and then cycle via the harbour town of Høruphav to Sønderborg.
