Boat mooring in Lübeck

Cycling is especially delightful in the flatlands of northern Germany, and with the Baltic Sea in sight, pedaling becomes even more enjoyable. This eight-day cycling tour leads you from the historic Hanseatic city of Lübeck to the Danish border in Flensburg, renowned not only for its traffic offense data bank. Charming old towns alternate with picturesque nature reserves and, of course, fantastic beaches. Be sure to plan plenty of breaks to dip your feet in the sand and savor the sight of an authentic windmill.

Step into history in Lübeck and immerse yourself in the beauty of the city with its bustling bars and shops. En route to Neustadt, you'll cycle along the coast and make stops at the renowned Baltic seaside resorts of Travemünde and Timmendorfer Strand. The route then leads you to the charming towns of Heiligenhafen and Schönberg, where the magnificent manor houses are sure to capture your attention.

On day 5, you'll start cycling, but soon switch to the ferry to Friedrichsort. After spending the night in Eckernförde, you'll pedal through untouched meadows and forests to Kappeln, where the famous "Amanda" mill awaits. On the final day of this leg, you'll explore the Geltinger Birk nature reserve and visit the moated castle of Glücksburg.

  • The view from the pier in Grömitz: The pier extends nearly 400 meters into the Baltic Sea. Take your time and stroll out onto the sea. Once you reach the end, turn around and revel in the magnificent views of the Bay of Lübeck—an ideal spot to relax and unwind!
  • The beautiful, historic “Amanda” mill was built in 1877 and was originally used to grind grain. The Amanda Mill is a classic gallery windmill featuring a rectangular floor plan and a rotating hood that adjusts according to the wind direction. Nowadays, it serves as a popular destination for visitors eager to delve into the traditional craftsmanship of millers.
  • The moated castle of Glücksburg, situated near the town of Glücksburg on the Flensburg Fjord, stands as one of the most remarkable examples of Renaissance architecture in Northern Europe. Constructed in the 16th century, the castle initially served as a residence for the ducal family of Schleswig-Holstein.

The flat terrain along the coast makes cycling in this region especially enjoyable for cyclists of all ages and fitness levels. There are some slightly hilly stages in the Holstein hinterland. You'll cover between 45 and 60 kilometers each day, and the itinerary includes various boat excursions.

There, where the wind ruffles your hair and the views of the sea nourish the soul, the Baltic Sea Cycle Route offers beautiful cycling holidays. Expansive beaches, picturesque harbor towns, and breathtaking nature await you—so hop on and ride with us!
