In St Andrews, you’ll feel the unique charm of the “Home of Golf” before experiencing the warmth of Scottish hospitality at a whisky tasting. Picturesque villages, expansive valleys, and a hint of Celtic mystique accompany your cycling stages, making each day a remarkable journey through nature, culture, and history.

This cycling holiday through the Scottish Highlands combines breathtaking natural scenery with places steeped in history. From the open hills around Pitlochry, through the gentle valleys of the Angus Glens, to the lively coastal towns on Scotland’s east coast, you will experience a landscape full of contrasts. Castles with royal pasts, rugged mountain silhouettes, and charming villages shape the route as you cycle along quiet roads and idyllic river landscapes. In St Andrews, on the banks of the River Tay, and across the gently rolling Lowlands, Scotland reveals both its cultivated and wild sides.

  • Blair Castle & Scone Palace: Two historic gems offering deep insights into Scottish monarchy, with magnificent rooms and extensive parklands.
  • Angus Glens: Quiet, secluded valleys where the Highlands show their wild, untamed side – perfect for undisturbed moments in nature.
  • St Andrews: The historic university town, with its ruins, museums, and the famous “Old Course,” combines culture, youthfulness, and a coastal atmosphere.
  • Dundee Waterfront: Modern architecture, the innovative V&A Museum, and maritime history aboard the “Discovery” ship meet vibrant city life.
  • Whisky Tasting: Fine flavors, regional distilling traditions, and Scottish hospitality make for a delightful conclusion to an eventful cycling day.

The tour is rated medium difficulty and combines gentle hills with some moderate climbs. The early stages involve longer but steady inclines, while sections along the River Tay and the route to St Andrews are pleasantly flat. Cycling is mainly on lightly trafficked country roads and quiet service roads, with a few stretches on busier streets.

Thanks to good signage and diverse scenery, this route is ideal for active cyclists who enjoy a mix of nature, culture, and relaxed riding.

Arrival in Pitlochry

From Pitlochry, you set off eastward, passing quaint distilleries and the charming dam. A gentle climb leads into open, rolling hills, followed by a long descent with breathtaking views. Those opting for the alternative route will find the untamed calm of the Angus Glens—secluded valleys where time seems to pause, nestled beneath the rugged peaks of the Grampians.

This excursion takes you through gentle farmland, always with the Grampian Mountains rising to the north. The highlight is a visit to Glamis Castle, a magnificent historic castle that once inspired Shakespeare. From there, you cycle northward, with the mountains drawing ever closer. Scenic routes lead you back to Alyth or Kirriemuir.

The route takes you southward from Alyth or Kirriemuir through gentle rolling hills. After cycling along peaceful paths, the panorama of the River Tay opens up, guiding you all the way to Dundee. This vibrant city blends maritime heritage with contemporary culture—from the legendary research vessel HMS Discovery to the award-winning V&A Museum.

After crossing the River Tay, you’ll cycle at a leisurely pace toward St. Andrews. This historic university town charms visitors with its cobbled streets, centuries-old buildings, and striking abbey and castle ruins. Renowned worldwide as the home of the “Old Course,” the birthplace of golf, St. Andrews radiates a unique atmosphere where history, student life, and the sea breeze come together in perfect harmony.

From Dundee, you’ll start with a gentle ride along the River Tay, mainly following the National Cycle Route straight to Perth. A rewarding detour leads to Falkland, where the impressive castle once served as a residence for Mary, Queen of Scots. Upon reaching Perth, picturesque riverside paths and the charming old town provide the perfect setting to unwind at the end of the day’s stage.

Today is dedicated to Perth and its surroundings. Those seeking a more leisurely pace can wander the city on foot or simply soak up the riverside ambiance. By bike, a ride to the magnificent Scone Palace beckons—once the coronation site of Scottish kings and queens. Its treasured collections and the tales of the legendary Stone of Destiny make for an unforgettable experience.
