Ionian Island

Island hopping in Greece

8 Days / 7 Nights

Zakynthos beach

The Ionian Islands are a fantastic destination for cyclists. The routes take you through hidden corners and picturesque villages, far off the beaten path. Here, you'll discover the true and authentic Greece. Zakynthos features a fertile plain with hundreds of narrow roads winding through vineyards and olive groves. Kefalonia is more rugged and hilly, with occasional climbs that reward you with breathtaking views of the turquoise sea. The small, intimate island of Ithaca is the cherry on top, the olive on the feta, and guaranteed love at first sight. Covered with forests of cypress, native mastic, and pine trees, it’s known as the home of Odysseus. Every traveler should visit Ithaca at least once to trace the footsteps of this epic journey. Thanks to the porous limestone soil and wet winters, the islands are lush and fertile year-round.

Itinerary at a glance

The lush and fertile Ionian Islands beckon in spring with a rainbow of wildflowers lining the roadsides, in summer with abundant sunshine, and in autumn with pleasant water temperatures simply perfect for swimming.

Upon arriving in Zakynthos, a taxi will take you from the airport to Alykes/Alykanas, a lovely resort with a long sandy beach. You can embark on your first short bike ride to the church on Ano Gerakari Hill (approximately 13 km).

To kick off your stage, you'll zigzag along narrow roads through olive groves, cycling towards the coast and through endless vineyards. The route takes you from village to village, from church tower to church tower, and along the slopes of Mount Vrachionas. The old main road connects the Riza villages, leading you through the heart of the island. In the square of Macherado, you'll find the old church of Agia Mavra, home to a valuable 16th-century icon. Afterward, you'll head to the island's capital and board the ferry. Sailing over the Greek mainland, you’ll set course for the port of Poros on the island of Kefalonia. Upon arrival, the hotel owner will be waiting to greet you at the dock.

Immediately after leaving Poros, the road ascends through a spectacular gorge. At the summit, you’ll find a small church with a fountain—perfect for a refreshing break after the day's first exertion. You’ll roll along a scenic roadway with breathtaking views, following the slopes of the majestic Mount Aenos, until you reach the capital, Argostoli. With its magnificent avenues and palm trees, the city has been influenced by Venetian and Italian styles for centuries, and these influences can be seen throughout. The central 'Piazza' is a must-visit spot that you won’t want to miss.

Argostoli is a delightful destination for a leisurely day. Several beautiful beaches are just a short bike ride away, with the popular sandy shores of Lassi standing out as true gems. You can also discover the secluded beaches of Gradakia, tucked away in charming coves and caves. For those seeking a bit more adventure, consider cycling to the Mycenaean walls of Krani, hidden within an olive grove in the hills. Alternatively, challenge yourself with the more demanding route to the Kipourion Monastery, which majestically overlooks the cliffs of the Pelaki Peninsula’s west coast. If you prefer a more relaxed outing, stroll along the shopping street of Lithostroto, lined with inviting boutiques, or keep an eye out for the magnificent Caretta Caretta sea turtles, often seen just behind the vegetable market..

The morning kicks off with a brief ferry ride across the bay. Departing from the town of Lixouri, the route winds northward, where a gentle ascent awaits but doesn’t last long. You'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Myrtos Beach, a striking white pebble shore that beautifully contrasts with the azure sea, renowned as one of Greece's most photographed beaches. After a lengthy descent through a lush and fertile valley, you’ll arrive at the picturesque fishing village of Agia Efimia. The final leg of your journey runs parallel to the sea, tracing the shoreline of Sami Bay. The afternoon ferry to Ithaka takes about half an hour. Following a two-kilometer climb, a thrilling descent reveals stunning vistas of Ithaka's main town. Vathi is gracefully nestled in a natural bay, offering a charming ambiance where you can meander through its narrow streets or enjoy a cold frappé coffee while watching the world go by. As evening falls, Vathi comes alive, and you can indulge in freshly caught fish at one of the traditional tavernas lining the harbor.

You could choose to take a rest day, relax on your balcony, or soak up the sun on the beach. However, that would mean missing out on an extraordinary cycling experience. Today’s stage offers the opportunity to reach the picturesque fishing port of Kioni, with the option to shorten the route at any point. After about an hour, the path diverges: leisurely cyclists can continue on the gentle downhill road, savoring sweeping views of Kefalonia across the water. In contrast, more adventurous cyclists turn right and ascend the winding road, passing the Katheron Monastery nestled just below the summit of Mount Neriton. According to legend, this is where Odysseus once resided, with his palace thought to lie in the ruins of a Mycenaean structure hidden deep within an olive grove near Stavros. Continuing along the stunning coastline, you’ll ride towards Kioni, a charming village characterized by its delightful pastel-colored houses. This idyllic spot is perfect lunch break and serves as the turning point of your route.

In the morning, you’ll embark on a ferry to Kefalonia. Upon arrival, another ascent awaits you—your final challenging route. As you climb beneath the shade of cypress and pine trees, you’ll navigate the ridge of Digaleto. The effort will soon be forgotten as you glide down the slopes toward Poros. By early afternoon, you’ll take the ferry back to Zakynthos, crossing the mainland once again. For your last evening, consider dining at one of the traditional tavernas lining the boulevard, where enchanting cantades are sung, extolling the beauty of the Ionian Islands. If fortune smiles upon you, you may find yourself wholeheartedly echoing the sentiments of the locals as they share their melodies.
