The route leads west from Santander along the coastline. As you cycle past green meadows and hidden coves, you’ll arrive in Santillana del Mar. This medieval town captivates with its cobbled streets, historic stone houses, and a nearly untouched charm that transports you back to a bygone era.

 

Departing Santillana del Mar along narrow country roads, you’ll arrive in Comillas, where the hilltop university and Gaudí’s playful El Capricho captivate at every turn. The route then leads to the coast at San Vicente de la Barquera, where colorful fishing boats bob in the waves and charming eateries serve freshly caught seafood.

 

At the start of the day, you’ll cycle through a landscape of expansive beaches and rugged rocky shores. Crossing into Asturias, you’ll be greeted by the region’s distinctive charm. The day’s destination is Llanes, a lively fishing town with a picturesque harbor, where countless cafés, bars, and sunlit terraces create a bright, maritime atmosphere.

The route follows the coastline, where charming seaside towns and expansive beaches stretch out like a string of pearls. The sea constantly reappears in your view, while authentic villages invite you to pause for a short break. Your destination for the day, Ribadesella, sits majestically at the river’s mouth, captivating visitors with its beachfront promenade and relaxed coastal charm.

 

Today’s stage leads you from Ribadesella inland. Along the way, you’ll pass through a significant wetland that serves as a refuge for countless bird species. The route then winds through gently rolling countryside to Villaviciosa, celebrated as the capital of Asturian sidrería. Here, traditional taverns offer the region’s iconic cider and give the town its distinctive charm.

 

On the final day of cycling, gentle hills and quaint villages accompany you before secluded beaches tempt you for a refreshing dip in the sea. You’ll approach Gijón, where the harbor, historic old town, and modern promenade create a spectacular finale. This lively city provides a fitting and vibrant conclusion to your travel.
