Cycling along Portugal’s irresistible coastline

Once again, it’s time for another adventure with Eurobike Cycling Holidays! After my tour along the Loire Cycle Path last year, this time the Portuguese Atlantic coast from Porto to Lisbon offered a completely different backdrop. A tour that blends natural beauty, relaxed cycling, and the vibrant spirit of Portugal in the most effortless way.

Miles of pure coastal bliss

If you love dramatic coastal scenery, endless sandy beaches, and the feeling of riding right alongside the Atlantic for hours on end, this tour will stay with you for a long time. The route’s diversity is what makes it truly special: In the north, Portugal’s west coast is still rugged, windswept, and almost wild, with dramatic cliffs, crashing waves, and an untamed atmosphere. The further south you go, the more Mediterranean and laid-back the landscape becomes. Suddenly, one beach follows the next, charming beach cafés appear, and by the time you reach the area around Cascais, you’ll be soaking in a true Riviera vibe.

With Porto behind us and the Atlantic ahead

Our first day begins in Porto. Still surrounded by the city’s unique old-town charm, we cross the famous bridge over the Douro and soon experience the Atlantic up close for the very first time. The route quickly leads south, passing countless sandy beaches. The area around the Esmoriz lagoon is especially beautiful: cycling along long wooden boardwalks through the dunes, you can soak in the peaceful atmosphere between the sea, the coast, and nature.

Arriving in the “Venice of Portugal”

Day two brings a shorter, but especially atmospheric stage along the Aveiro lagoon. After a quick ferry ride, we arrive in Aveiro, the city known as the “Venice of Portugal” for its canals, colorful boats, and gondoliers. Art Nouveau lovers will find plenty to admire here. The charming facades, many adorned with traditional azulejos, give the city its unique character.

Traditional colorful buildings line the main canal in Aveiro with traditional moliceiro boats moored along the waterfront and pedestrians on the promenade.

The most colorful photo spots of the tour

The next highlight awaits on day three: Costa Nova. Here, a stunning white sandy beach invites you to relax, while the famous, brightly striped Palheiros create some of the most picturesque photo spots of the entire tour. Once simple fishermen’s huts, these charming beach houses now make Costa Nova a true gem along the coast. The journey continues along the Aveiro lagoon to Praia de Mira. By sunset on the beach, every traveler’s heart is sure to soar.

Rain magic and desert dunes

Day four may start with a few hours of rain, but spirits remain high. The first half of the route leads through a seemingly endless dune landscape, almost entirely free of traffic, and at times it feels like a small desert. Once you’ve conquered this stretch, the tour’s first real climb awaits: up to the lighthouse at Cabo Mondego. The winding coastal road demands a bit of effort, but rewards you with spectacular views of the Atlantic.

Fairy-tale castles and the Portuguese Riviera

The day begins with a transfer to the enchanting mountain town of Sintra, famous for its grand estates and palaces. Today, sightseeing takes center stage: we explore the vibrant Pena Palace and the mysterious Quinta da Regaleira. The highlight here is the legendary Initiation Well, a unique blend of well, tower, and mystical artwork that’s unlike anything you’ll find elsewhere.

After our time in Sintra, one of the most beautiful cycling sections of the entire tour awaits. Having tackled the winding ascent to Pena Palace, we now coast downhill for miles toward the sea.

Soon, we reach a spot even James Bond appreciated: the iconic beach of Praia do Guincho. It’s one of those places where you just can’t take enough photos. Towering dunes, the vast Atlantic, and Portugal’s magical light create an atmosphere you’ll never forget. The day’s destination is Cascais, a stylish coastal town marking the start of the Portuguese Riviera all the way to Lisbon.

With the finish line in sight: Arrival in Lisbon

The sixth and final day of cycling brings more breathtaking beaches. We start out along the beautiful seaside promenade to Estoril, then continue riding along the coast toward the mouth of the Tagus River. At this point, it’s clear: Lisbon is just around the corner.

Passing iconic sights like the Torre de Belém and the impressive suspension bridge over the Tagus, the route hugs the water all the way into the heart of Portugal’s capital.

Conclusion

This unforgettable cycling tour ends just as it began: in a fascinating city brimming with atmosphere. After charming Porto, the vibrant capital Lisbon awaits as the grand finale — two cities that couldn’t be more different, yet together they create the perfect setting for this remarkable Atlantic tour.

My favorite Place

Without a doubt, Praia do Guincho. This sweeping stretch of sand near Cascais is one of Portugal’s most beloved surf spots — raw, wild, and absolutely stunning. Even from the cycling route, you’re instantly swept out of everyday life for a few moments. The powerful Atlantic wind, towering dunes, endless ocean, and that magical light create an atmosphere that feels almost surreal. I could have just stopped and gazed out at the sea for hours. It’s one of those moments from the tour that’s etched deep in my memory, and I know I’ll never forget it.
