Travel Story: Majorca – The Grand Loop Tour

Autumn in Majorca – a hidden gem for an active cycling holiday
Landscape with sea views in Sencelles on Mallorca

A self-guided cycling vacation on the sunny island of Majorca – that sounds fantastic. Inspired by this idea, I’ve chosen my second Team Member on Tour assignment and am excited to explore the grand tour of Majorca together with my friend. Over the next few days, I’ll dive deeper into the tour, far from the summer heat and tourist crowds, enjoying each stage in pleasantly mild temperatures. Autumn, I believe, is the perfect time to experience this dream island in a whole new way.

The journey is smooth and effortless, with plenty of flights offering a convenient and quick route to the island. After a short taxi ride from the airport, we arrive at the thoughtfully chosen Hotel BG Java, where we receive a warm welcome from the staff. Most hotels aren’t located in Palma’s historic city center, but rather in Can Pastilla, right along the coast and by the sea. The view from the hotel, overlooking Playa de Palma and the sparkling sea, is breathtaking and fills us with excitement for the active days ahead.

On your pedals, get set, go!

The next morning arrives, and after a hearty breakfast followed by a detailed informative briefing, we embark on the first stage of our tour with our rental bikes ready to go. With the sky blanketed in gloomy rain clouds, we set off in our rain gear—a smart choice, as within the first few kilometers, the rain begins to pour, and the wind whips around us. But as the saying goes, there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.

Undeterred, we embrace the adventure and enjoy our first ride along the picturesque beachfront promenade, past the coastline, and all the way to the Llevant salt flats. By the time we roll into Colònia de Sant Jordi, marking the end of the first stage, the rain clouds have lifted, and we’re already excited about the adventures the days ahead will bring.

Wonderful places despite the clouds

Our next cycling day leads us to the quaint and charming harbor town of Porto Cristo in eastern Majorca. We set out under rainy skies, but the clouds lend a uniquely captivating light to the island’s landscape. Along the route, we pass through picturesque towns like Felanitx and Santanyí, their charm undeniable even beneath the overcast skies.

Rewarded with rays of sunshine

The next day greets us with much-improved weather, and after a delicious breakfast at our hotel, THB Felip, we set off under radiant sunshine. The clouds have vanished, and the sunny island reveals its vibrant colors in full splendor. Beneath a brilliant blue sky, we cycle from Manacor to Petra, where a traditional "Majorcan lunch snack" awaits. Refreshed from our break, we eagerly hop back on our rental bikes, with the final stretch to C’an Picafort just ahead.

A blend of culture and coast

We spend two nights in C’an Picafort at the Hotel Eix Platja Daurada. Thanks to the convenient luggage transport, our bags stay put, and we dive straight into the next stage. Our route takes us to Port de Pollença and Alcúdia, the island's oldest town. We cycle through the S'Albufera Nature Reserve, passing beautiful trails that lead us to the Bay of Pollença, before making our way back to C’an Picafort. After another 40 kilometers, a refreshing dip in the sea is the perfect reward, with the hotel just a few steps from the stunning beach.

On two wheels to the best paella

With full energy, we begin the stage from C’an Picafort to Port de Sóller. We cycle directly inland, passing through charming villages, and meet in Inca for a bus transfer over the Tramuntana Mountains to the Lluc Monastery. The transfer helps us cover a lot of elevation gain, allowing us to explore the beautiful monastery before continuing our journey past the large reservoirs to the drop-off point. The Tramuntana Mountains impress us from every angle, offering countless stunning views. We start our descent toward Port de Sóller, and with each pedal stroke, the landscape and the views of the blue sea become more and more breathtaking.

The descent leads us to Fornalutx, often hailed by tourists as the most beautiful village in Spain. We stop at the restaurant Es Turo to savor an exquisite & tour inclusive paella menu.

After a perfect break with sensational paella and a heavenly almond cake, we hop back on our bikes and continue our ride, passing through orange and lemon groves until we reach Port de Sóller, where we are warmly welcomed at the Hotel Marina. Despite tired legs, we venture out in the evening to explore the alleys and numerous shops of Port de Sóller, discovering plenty along the way. We are truly captivated by the charm and atmosphere of this coastal town.

A grand finale to this cycling journey

On the final day, the most challenging stage awaits us. We’re excited for the physical adventure ahead and start the last leg with eager anticipation. This stage is also a personal highlight for me – breathtaking views over the sea, stunning villages like the picturesque Deía, and the renowned Valldemossa, all part of the grand finale of the tour. A stop in the old town of Palma is also highly recommended before the bike path along the sandy beach takes us back to our hotel at Playa de Palma.

Conclusion

A delightful journey is coming to an end. We wholeheartedly recommend the Majorca loop tour and feel a deep sense of pride in the kilometers we've shared together, cycling around this beautiful sun-kissed island. Our hearts are already looking forward to the next cycling adventure that awaits us.

My favorite place

Our absolute favorite spot on this Eurobike Original Tour is without a doubt the view on the second-to-last day of our journey, from the “Mirador de ses Barques” viewpoint on the way to Port de Sóller. The breathtaking view of the Port de Sóller harbor, nestled within the enchanting landscape, is simply beyond words. We both linger in the moment, fully immersed in the beauty of the scene, unable to tear ourselves away from the captivating vista.
