Kirschblütenradweg along the vineyard

This cycling tour through eastern Austria begins in the waltz capital—Vienna. Pedal along the grand Ringstraße, past St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom), through the Prater park, and across the Danube Island (Donauinsel). Before heading south toward Lake Neusiedl (Neusiedlersee), take time to admire the magnificent Schönbrunn Palace. The flat landscape is gently dotted with rolling vineyard hills, while the lake’s shimmering reed beds lend a touch of enchantment. In Rust and Mörbisch, you might catch a glimpse of a stork—and you’re sure to enjoy tasting some of the region’s outstanding wines. A detour to the charming old town of Sopron offers a glimpse into Hungary, while a visit to Bratislava lets you explore the Slovakian capital. In the Seewinkel region, listen for the calls of rare birds, and in Eisenstadt, follow in the footsteps of the Esterházy family.

Upon arrival, you should exploreVienna before the first stage of the tour leads to Baden. Between the Vienna Forest and vineyards, the spa town attracts visitors with its casino, thermal baths and a charming Biedermeier-style town centre. The tour continues towards Lake Neusiedl, a steppe lake that is truly unique in Austria. You may spot some of the famous storks with which the inhabitants share their pretty home.

After a detour to Hungary, you will enter the "Neusiedler See - Seewinkel" National Park, which is 300 km2 in size and is known for its exceptional flora and fauna. It is of great importance as a resting place for bird migration, where thousands of birds stop. The 6th day of the tour serves as a rest day, where you can enjoy the lake to the fullest. The last stage leads into Slovakia to Bratislava. On the way you pass the birthplace of Joseph and Michael Haydn. In Carnuntum you will follow in the footsteps of the Romans, where today you can visit a reconstructed Roman town quarter.

  • Vienna's magnificent Ringstrasse: this is certainly and by far where most of the city's sights are to be found - whether the State Opera House, City Hall or Parliament. Did you know? The Ringstrasse is divided into nine sections.
  • The gentle vineyards of Lake Neusiedl are not only an eye-catcher in the unique landscape, but also the home of world-famous wines. Be sure to stop at one of the ‘Buschenschenken’ and taste not only the fine wines, but also the special cuisine, which features Hungarian influences.
  • The cycle tour to Hungary to the former Ödenburg offers two highlights. In Sopron, a walk through the great old town, including the Fire Tower, Trinity Column and Ursuline Church, is worthwhile. But the outward and return journeys are not to be neglected either, as travel fantasies come true along Lake Neusiedl!
  • Lively Bratislava is very underrated among Europe's capitals. Stroll through the lively old town and stop by the UFO. What is that? I guess you'll have to find out for yourself...

The route is almost entirely flat, with the exception of a few vineyards. One or two stages can be shortened by taking the train. A special feature awaits on the last day - from Bratislava back to Vienna by hydrofoil.

Itinerary at a glance

After taking in the many sights along Vienna’s Ringstraße, a change of pace awaits at Lake Neusiedl, where diverse natural landscapes unfold. Savor fine regional wines and discover the flavors of Hungarian cuisine in Sopron’s charming old town. Whether you're walking in the footsteps of the Romans in Carnuntum, enjoying cultural highlights in Mörbisch, or exploring the unique habitats of the Seewinkel region—this tour promises plenty of variety and unforgettable experiences!

After the tour information and bike handover, it’s time to start exploring—and there’s no better way to experience the imperial city of Vienna than by bike. Ride along the famous Ringstraße, where the grand facades of the State Opera, Parliament, Burgtheater, and City Hall line your path. The impressive Hofburg Palace is another must-see along the way. Be sure to take a turn down Kärntner Straße, admire the striking St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom), and leave time to meander through the quiet lanes and hidden corners of Vienna’s enchanting old town.

Your cycling journey begins on Vienna’s Danube Island (Donauinsel), where scenic bike paths lead you to the stunning Schönbrunn Palace. After exploring the palace and its gardens at your own pace, you’ll pedal onward along a dedicated route to the charming Biedermeier town of Baden. Nestled in the Vienna Woods (Wienerwald), this historic spa town is rich with stories—and it’s no coincidence that Ludwig van Beethoven completed his Ninth Symphony, including the legendary “Ode to Joy,” here. Be sure to visit the elegant Casino Baden, the impressive Römertherme, and the Art Deco–style Thermalstrandbad from 1926—a luxurious attempt by Vienna’s nobility to bring the Adriatic coast to Baden.

Leaving Baden along scenic routes, you’ll soon notice the landscape transforming around you. The atmosphere becomes truly spectacular at Europe’s westernmost steppe lake, where the gentle foothills of the Leitha Mountains (Leithagebirge) give way to the vast Hungarian Puszta. Highlights to explore independently include the grand Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt and the ancient Roman quarry (Römersteinbruch) in St. Margarethen. As you cycle through softly rolling vineyards, take in breathtaking views over the lake and, in the evening, savor a superb glass of local wine. The charming towns of Rust and Mörbisch, with their authentic winegrowers’ spirit, offer an especially delightful experience.

Starting from the famed festival town of Mörbisch—with its atmospheric lakeside stage that comes alive each summer during the celebrated operetta festival—you’ll pedal through rolling vineyards that offer breathtaking views over the lake as you near the Hungarian border. Soon, you’ll arrive at the historic town of Ödenburg, where a beautifully preserved old town awaits your discovery. Today’s Sopron welcomes you with lively streets and charming squares perfect for lingering. Your return to Mörbisch and Rust follows a picturesque bike path along the captivating lakeshore scenery.

Your day begins with a ferry ride to Illmitz, setting the stage for an exploration of the unique National Park Neusiedler See-Seewinkel. Here, the birdwatchers’ observation decks rise as the only elevated points in the flat landscape. It’s worth noting that in this region, as well as on the western slopes between Podersdorf, Illmitz, and Apetlon, excellent classified wines are produced in the lowlands, including some internationally acclaimed Trockenbeerenauslese varieties. The “Lacken” are shallow, salt-rich lakes about 50 cm deep that give the Seewinkel its distinctive flora and fauna—and lend their name to the scenic Lacken Cycle Path. Along this route, you’ll pedal past wet meadows, grazing lands, and rolling vineyards.

Hotel (example): Seeblick

Take a day to relax and recharge amidst a variety of recreational options. The lake is a paradise for sailing, surfing, and swimming, while cyclists can enjoy the scenic Cherry Blossom Trail—a beautiful 45 km (about 28 miles) loop around the lake.

Refreshed and relaxed, you’ll cycle through Rohrau, home to the birthplaces of Joseph and Michael Haydn, before reaching the “Römerland Carnuntum.” At the so-called Heidentor, the Amber Road and the Limes Road intersect. In Petronell, take time to explore the faithfully reconstructed Roman neighborhood at the open-air museum. The border town of Hainburg lies right on the Danube, just a few kilometers from your stage destination, Bratislava. An evening stroll through Bratislava’s charming old town is the perfect way to end the day.
