Culinary delights and pure nature experiences

Panorama around the Kaiserstuhl

The Kaiserstuhl is a region blessed with sunshine, nestled in the Upper Rhine Plain and just a stone’s throw from the charming university city of Freiburg. It is also renowned for its exceptional Pinot wines, which flourish on terraced vineyards. Over the course of seven days, you’ll explore this captivating region by bicycle, enjoying local flavors like flammkuchen and maultäschle—small, delicious pockets of dough filled with meat and spinach—while engaging in delightful conversations with the warm-hearted locals.

Arrive in the enchanting city of Freiburg, where you can leisurely embrace the mild climate and the timeless charm of the old town. Your first cycling kilometers will take you from the city into nature, where vineyards and quaint, picturesque treasures await. You’ll spend the night in or near Breisach, before setting out the following day on a scenic loop around the Kaiserstuhl. While a few hills may challenge you, the breathtaking panoramic views make it all the more rewarding.

On Day 4, crossing the Rhine means you’re also crossing into a new country: Bonjour la France! You’ll explore the charming towns of Neuf-Brisach and Colmar—let yourself wander and savor a fine wine or two. The following day, treat yourself to a relaxing soak in the healing waters of the Cassiopeia Therme in Badenweiler, before the final leg of your journey on Day 6. With views of the Black Forest and the Vosges, you’ll cycle through the Markgräflerland, returning once again to Freiburg.

  • Freiburg im Breisgau, renowned for its sunny location and picturesque old town, serves as the gateway to the Kaiserstuhl, one of Germany’s most esteemed wine regions. Stroll through historic alleys with views of the magnificent Münster and cross the charming Bächle streams that wind through the city.
  • An excursion to Alsace: Neuf-Brisach, a UNESCO World Heritage site, captivates with its star-shaped layout and the military architecture of Vauban. Following well-marked cycling paths, you’ll journey through the idyllic Alsatian landscape, passing blooming fields and charming villages. The route then leads to Colmar, one of the most beautiful cities in Alsace, renowned for its well-preserved old town, colorful timber-framed houses, the picturesque "Little Venice" district, and the acclaimed Unterlinden Museum.
  • Roman bathing culture and healing thermal water: Badenweiler has a long tradition as a spa town, dating back to Roman times. The spa is located close to the well-preserved Roman bathing facilities, some of which date back to the 1st century. Explore the historic ruins, then indulge in a rejuvenating wellness treatment.

The Kaiserstuhl region offers breathtaking views at every turn – cycling through this scenic landscape is a true pleasure. Each day, you’ll ride between 30 and 70 kilometers, with the final distance typically determined by your chosen route. A moderate level of fitness will be helpful for the hilly stretches through the vineyards. Another highlight is the region’s mild climate, as Freiburg is one of the sunniest cities in Germany.

Speaking of Germany – the Federal Republic is one of the favorite destinations for active travelers. On a cycling tour in Germany, you can ride along the coast, explore vibrant cities and nature parks, cross the Alps, or dive into sparkling lakes. There is simply so much to see and experience!

Itinerary at a glance

Besides the urban charm of Freiburg and Colmar, the Kaiserstuhl region offers primarily idyllic nature. Sun-drenched vineyards near Breisach and soothing thermal springs in Badenweiler are just two of the attractions you can expect to enjoy.

The tour starts in Freiburg, the warmest city in Germany. The ´Bächle´, the little gullies, that run through the old town give the city its very own flair.

Hop on your bike and start the first stage of your cycle holiday in the Kaiserstuhl. Get out of the hustle and bustle of the big city and into an idyllic landscape. You cycle along vineyards and through beautiful little villages. Discover the extremely attractive historic centres of Breisach and Burkheim. Try the sun-kissed wines of the region, plus a portion of ‚Leberle mit Brägele‘ (fried liver with fried potatoes) and you are energised for the onward journey.

Not far from the Rhine wetlands, your cycle path first leads you through the vineyards of the Kaiserstuhl. Expect some inclines for the first few kilometres. You are rewarded with a magnificent view over the wine region. Then you cycle on pleasantly flat paths through numerous small winegrowing communities. Today’s stage of the Kaisterstuhl-cycle tour takes you back to the starting point of the day.

You cross the river Rhine by bike and thus also the natural border to France. Neuf-Brisach is the city of the Sun King. A tour of the octagonal, architecturally unique town will also fascinate you. Then cycle to charming Colmar. Old, well-preserved half-timbered houses and bridges decorated with flowers contribute to the dreamy atmosphere of the Petite Venise district.

The river Rhine flows North. You follow the river – but in the opposite direction. You soon reach the first spa resorts. Here on the edge of the Black Forest, healing waters come out of the mountains and have encouraged the creation of thermal spas, some of them since Roman times. Visit a Roman bath ruin before you then enjoy the pleasant thermal water in the Cassiopeia thermal springs (not included).

You cycle through the wine villages of the Markgräflerland, on the right rises the Black Forest, on the left its reflection, the Vosges. Freiburg is the warmest and Southernmost city in Germany and has its own flair due to the gullies in the historic centre. From the castle hill you enjoy a fabulous view over the city and the surrounding area.
