From the port metropolis to the capital
This self-guided cycle tour follows the Elbe and Havel rivers from Hamburg to Berlin over mostly flat terrain on cycle paths and quiet country roads. Highlights include historic half-timbered houses in Lauenburg and Hitzacker, Westhavelland Nature Park, the Brandenburg lake district, and magnificent Potsdam. Daily distances range from 40 to 80 km. The route passes through former inner-German border areas and Germany's stork-richest village, Rühstädt.
The rivers Elbe and Havel connect the lively port metropolis of Hamburg with the capital of Germany – Berlin. At the beginning of this cycle holiday from Hamburg to Berlin you cycle along the river Elbe from Hamburg to Havelberg. Here you switch from the river Elbe to the river Havel and continue your cycle route along the Havel cycle path. En route you cross the Schollener Land and experience the extensive landscape of the Westhavelland Nature Park. Via Brandenburg as well as the island- and blossom town of Werder you reach Potsdam and the unique palace gardens of Sanssouci Palace. You cross the lake Großer Wannsee by ferry and reach Berlin-Spandau on quiet paths along the shore, where you now follow the Spreer cycle path into the city centre.
This tour leads you on mostly flat terrain on cycle paths and quiet country roads, largely near the rivers Elbe, Havel and Spree. However this holiday includes several smaller ascents to be tackled.
